Default '99 996 vs '00 S2000

Wouldya think I was crazy to buy a very well priced low mileage, still under warranty 996 and sell the S2000? I love the S2K, but I also love to experience new cars. I think few things less than the 996 would more rewarding from a performance aspect....

Any current/previous 996 owners out their?

I'm super confused by your question, but obviously a 996 is a better car than the s2k. It's not quite in the same price league, but if you can do it, I would.

Due to the "market downturn" (DONT USE THE "R" WORD!), '99 996's can be had for less than $50k if you look around.

In my area, used S2K's still get well over $30, and that supercharger & clutch I've been pining after would add another $8K, making the difference about $10K.

I also think S2K's will start seeing a more normal depreciation pretty soon... Supply has caught up with demand.

Well, an interesting twist!

I've been warned, by the Porsche owners on the 996 equivelant of s2000.com, no less, that early build '99 996's can have some significant quality problems. They would most still be under warranty for at least another year, but fit/finish, radio, engine, oil leak, and other problems are frequent complaints.

Most recommend going with a '00 or newer, which might just be out of my target price range.

I've also been reading that Boxsters can be had $4K - $5K less than MSRP if you call around. Hmmm That makes a base Boxster S $46K! Why oh why can't I just buy a car and be content for say, two years?

Of course you are right... but I have to start justifying it somehow!

Believe me, I know. Once you decide to turn a fast street car into an "open track whore", it's easy to justify putting $4k into an aready excellent suspension, etc.

I was all ready to give my $.02 on a Ducati 996 until I read further and saw you were talking about a Porsche. For that kind of money, I'd take a new M3 anyday!
