I dont have anything set up as a real business, but I do a bit of computer consulting and tech support as a side "hobby" that pays.
Getting into some very basic web design and site maintenance too through some of the same clients I have with my computer "business"
I also do some car detailing for people during the summer on weekends just for a little extra cash.
They are things I enjoy a lot, and it gives me a little extra money now and then. I dont count on it for income. It's "free" money when it comes to my financial situation. I honestly dont think I'd like to make a job out of them anyway. It would ruin a lot of the fun I have with it.

i say get your act together by carefully calculate every cent you earn and ponder the usage of those cents. do you REALLY NEED this thing or is it something you really want? do you really need to go out to eat that often? bag your lunch, learn about 529 funds in your state and how that affects you and your kid(s), save every penny you got, and maybe sell that S2000 and get something more practical. having kids is about being conservative with your resources (money & time). congratulations!
May I please make some recommendations?
I can't speak to your family issues, that is something you will have to work out and see what you can swing. However on business, please:
1) Purchase "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill (this should be your bible)
2) Read the "7 Habits.." by Stephen Covey and live it.
There are a number of other books that are helpful for those starting up.
Do you have a library card? search all you can on google about startup businesses and when you've hit that pretty good head down to your local library and check out books on how businesses operate. Open a dictionary and immerse yourself! Education and time are your allies here. You aren't going to become Microsoft overnight, so start slowly and do your homework.
Find something that doesn't require an enormous investment to get started in. Spend on a shoestring budget for any business expenditure, but choose quality. You mentioned that you have computer skills. See if you can combine technologies and areas of knowledge together in order to achieve a worthwhile service or project. Do you have a friend that you can go into business with that has a mutual interest in getting ahead? Sometimes opportunity can be found in the most unlikely of places.
Those are just some things to think about. -Please- PM me if you are interested in talking more. I have two businesses that are growing rapidly and I'm always interested in helping others get started. There is a lot to be gained out there, but you'll bleed a lot getting it going. Remember to learn from your failures and do not look at yourself critically if you fail a number of times getting started. Don't waste your money on useless trinkets.
Most importantly, keep your mouth shut and your eyes/ears open. When you find the one thing that works for you, keep after it until you succeed. I've found very often that the one thing that prevents people from the level they desire is simple persistence.
Again, please IM me if you would like to talk further. Best of luck! Hans
