A Wal-Mart spokesman has said the detained workers were not employed by Wal-Mart but by the subcontractors. Wal-Mart's contracts with the companies require that they follow local, state and federal employment laws, the company said.
I don't understand what your bitching about.

It happens, not everyone sees the world alike. I understand the controversy, I just feel walmart is doing the capitalism thing and people are dogging them for it. In the end, so long as they abide by the rules, I think its fine. If they knowingly employ illegal immigrants for the sole purpose of saving money they need a ass whoopin. If a store manager feels bad for some dude he's known for a long time and tries to let him slide well that isn't good but I don't think we need to knee cap him for it either.

Not an isolated incident:

http://money.cnn.com/2005/11/18/news/fortu...0/walmart_raid/

Senior Wal-Mart executives knew cleaning contractors were hiring illegal immigrants, many of whom were housed in crowded conditions and sometimes slept in the backs of stores, according to a federal agency's affidavit.

To the extent that Wal-Mart is "abiding by the rules" may prove not that Wal-Mart is the "bad guy" but that "the rules" are way too loose! And just yesterday, GM announced the closing of their auto assembly plant in my town (Okla. City), so here comes another 2500 workers who will go from their $25/hour jobs at GM to $5.15/hour at Wal-Mart or something like it. I suppose "the establishment" is rejoicing. I am not. And I'm retired --- not even part of the "labor market" any more. In fact, I am a stockholder in Wal-Mart. And, because of Wal-Mart's crappy practices, the value of my stock has gone to Hell, and I am trying to sell out for a decent price, but can't. I haven't been in a Wal-Mart for over a year, and it has nothing to do with their labor practices or my stock values. Their aisles are too narrow, their stores are too crowded as a result, and their check-out lines are too long because they are too damn cheap to hire enough people to man the check out stands and over half are closed while the lines just grow. And when I tell people that it has been more than a year since I've visited Wal-Mart, you would be surprised how many say "me too."

So, bottom line, Wal-Mart is hurting not only workers, but investor as well. And, it is presenting an unpleasant place to shop. Bad for labor, investors, and consumers, and just no damn good for anybody.

So why are they still so present in our towns and cities? Retailers tend to have fairly short business lives. Any "old timers" here remember when Montgomery Wards was a retail powerhouse? Now, they are bankrupt and gone. Sears, once the "king of retailing" is holding on by a thread. J.C. Penney is on the downward slope. Anybody recall Woolworths and TG&Y stores?

In ten years Wal-Mart will be just a memory, like those stores are. Wal-Mart is already on the downward slope. Don't believe this? Then how would you like to buy some Wal-Mart stock?

Thanks,
Richard
