Thanks for positing the link, I didn't realize what it was. I performed a few of those yesterday on some local hobos but was referring to them as "swap jobbies." Now I know the technical term!

So I go see Erik, he's an average sized regular guy. I quickly thank God he's not obese, it makes things so much more difficult. He's a friendly guy who is using humor to deal with his fear. He jokes about clearing his calendar for the next 2 months and says, "I guess I won't be making my appointment this afternoon."

I explain to him about the things I'll be doing to him. Monitors, intravenous IV's (large bore), arterial line, Large IV introducer, Pulmonary artery catheter, then going to sleep and insertion of the breathing tube followed by insertion of the transesophageal echo probe.

I tell him that this is a big operation but the last 2 i've done have come out successful, and I have no reason to think he won't fare well.

A couple of people come to get Erik, he is wheeled to the operating room. It's really cold in the operating room, and a nurse brings him a blanket from a warming oven. It feels so good, so comfortable. He sees a huge table of instruments to his left and a Scrub Tech expertly arranging something. He's moved gently to the OR table by 4 people. The anesthesiologist is at the head of the bed. He's happy to recognize someone for a moment and have someone call him Erik rather than Mr. Smth.
