Any audiophiles here?
Just wondering if I'm the only audiophile around here. Audio has been a hobby of mine for quite some time now. I used to design and build home theaters, so I've been around high end audio equipment for a long time. I'm no longer in that business, but I still keep current on all the latest equipment and technology. I still buy/sell/trade all types of equipment, and I enjoy talking about all things audio. I've recently been researching high end headphones for home and travel.
I'd like to discuss some of this stuff with like minded individuals... those who actually know what the hell they're talking about. You know, those individuals who have knowledge of audio beyond "Yeah, so Bose makes some great stuff!".... because we all know what a crock of crap that is.

I used to be kind of a casual fan but the industry of "hi end" just seems so full of itself. Everyone seems to have a "reference" series. Who in the hell is referring to these models and for what? Calling something Reference does not always make it so. Also, most audio snobs hate any main stream manufacturers, regardless of how good the product really is. My

I've been into audio for 20+ years. I have a basement full of stuff.
Your comments however are what drives the wedge between those that like music and those that appreciate excellent sound or well built components. Good sound is all about return on invesment. For some that happens very low on the curve, others need to reach to the end of the graph where another $100k in their system makes little improvement, but one worth it to them.
"Good" sound is also about preferrences. What I like in a system isn't going to be what someone else likes. A few years ago I let someone listen to my Etymotic Er4's, they much preferred their Somy MDR-71's. Why? The Sony's have a huge bass bump and they thought the Ety's sounded "thin" Who's right?

My main point is that it is all very subjective. When you start talking quality equipment, it is all about preference. There are barriers that some consumers will never cross, no matter how much they appreciate what the equipment does.
However, he was bashing EXTREMELY high end equipment... then hyping up the quality of his Sony amp, which is an outdated, very mainstream, off the shelf piece of equipment that is comparable to what you might find in a HTiB today. It was a very inconsistent argument, so I felt the need to point out where the flaws in his logic were.
