Default Any doctors in the house? General question

I can't go see my doc until later on today, but here's what's up:

My wisdom teeth (bottom, both sides) are poppin' up, it's uncomfortable and I think I have some kind of infection (is that possible?). No fever (~97.x degrees). My doc prescribed some Amoxicillin last week and the redness went away, however, now I'm having a canker sore and something similar on my tongue (like I bit it accidentally). Old Chinese would say it's the "fire" in my body (usually an indication of a lack of vitamin B2 and C), but I'm taking lots of that plus 2L of water every day.

So, being very paranoid when it comes to this type of stuff: what's going on? Could it be that I've got a viral infection from the wisdom teeth growing out? Should I go see a dentist or a doctor?

You could go see an ENT (ear, nose, throat specialist)?

Disclaimer
***I am not a doctor***

you most likely would have a bacterial infection, hence the antibiotic (if it were viral not really much the doctor could do about it anyway). As for canker like sores on your tongue I get them all the time if I bite my lip or tongue, and although they are painful and frick'n annoying its not really anything that I worry about, there is medicine you can get for them though. As for the wisdom teeth I would see your dentist and he could probably recommend a good oral surgeon to take them out if they are giving you problems.

edit: I just thought of this.
I would just try to keep the area in and around where your wisdom teeth are coming in clean (to avoid infection) swish with mouthwash or something during the day...might help?

Not a doc, but word from the wife (who is a doc) is that it could be a viral infection. It should go away on it's own if it is, but if it hurts she recommended that you get a mouthwash like Lidocaine. You should see your doctor who might refer you to an ENT.

uh, I just found out I can't PM you mingster. I would give you some advices but medical matters shouldn't be discussed so everyone can see them.
You can PM me for my opinion.

I get sores from certain types of walnuts... only food I am allergic to. L-lysine (you can get a bottle at Sam's, etc, in the supplements aisle) gets rid of them in only a day or two. Don't know why, but I was told to try it, and it works great. Hope it helps. Had my wisdom teeth cut out of my jawbone. Hope you don't have to experience the same...

You doc probably thought you had a little infection where the redness was and hence the amoxicillin. The redness could also have simply been irritation of the teeth erupting. It's exactly like a baby teething. The canker sore is causes by HSV type 1 usually. It's fairly ubiquitous and occurs like skibum said, when you have stress or something. It could have been a result of the irritation in your mouth where the teeth are erupting. It sounds like Ambesol, or any lidocaine based product could help. There are antivirals that can lessen the duration of the canker sores, but otherwise they spontaneously remit within 5-7 days.

Traditional Chinese medicine: watermelon frost. I use it for canker sores and works wonders. Don't know how it works but it works (tastes REAL nasty though).
