I had my bottom wisdom teeth cut out and my tops pulled out not too long ago. I had the exact same problem as you do. My dentist explained to me (after x-raying) that my wisdoms were growing into the ones next to them. So... that caused the swelling (which was very painful). As for the sores on my tongue, they were caused by chewing a funny way to avoid the "wisdom tooth" areas.
If you decide to have them taken out, I suggest being knocked out. I only had local. I didn't feel any pain (except for the 15 shots of local to numb my whole face... I'm not exaggerating), but I felt every push and pull and tug. It was not a pleasant experience.
Good Luck.

I had all four of mine out at the same time, I too had similar symptoms as they were ALL growing at the wrong angles, and my dentist advised that I didn't actually have room for them to come through .....

I had them out under general .... but it was still plenty sore for the next 3 or 4 days !!!!!!

You are in luck 'cause I'm a Dentist
In a nutshell you probably have an infection on the lower third molars. It's called pericoronitis. The Amoxicillin will help fight the infection and will temporarily make it go away but the redness and pain will return shortly unless you remove the cause, ie. extraction of the wisdom teeth. Have the teeth errupted at all? Have your dentist take a look and give a diagnosis.
Try rinsing with warm salt water until you go to the dentist.
If they are impacted and you need to get them extracted I would advise to have them taken out by an Oral Surgeon under sedation.

I had all my wisdoms pulled plus another tooth on the same day by an oral surgeon. It's no big deal. They knock you out and have their way with you while you are totally unconscious. You wake up with a sore mouth and sometimes sore parts on other parts of your anatomy but it's usually gone within a day. Then you rinse with salt water for a couple of days until the stitches dissolve. They won't bother you again but you may develope an appetite for bath houses.
Just kidding! It's no big deal. They hurt like hell when they come through. Just yankum! Your medical---------Not dental------should be billed because it is a surgery and your medical covers a higher percentage! Just do it!

well...mine don't hurt that much but yeah, they're like "sprouting" out on the bottom sides. My upper left wisdom is already out and about (feels ok, it's off to a slight angle but no big deal), right upper nowhere to be found.

thanks for all the help guys! i was freaking out for no reason - but now i'm a bit nervous about the surgery...

It depends how impacted the tooth is. In your case it is probably a Partial bony impaction. The lowest PBI fee i've seen from an Oral Surgeon is $450/ tooth. That does not include getting sedated. Taking both out and general anesthesia can run over a thousand dollars easy. And all four..... .If I were you I would either contact an oral surgeon that takes medical insurance or go to USC dental school and have the extractions done there at the Oral Surgery Dept. on the 1st floor for a lot less than outside.
Then again they can be simple extractions, I really can't tell you much without seeing the radiographs.

I am assuming you use this when a canker sore appears. How quickly does it work and exactly what does it do?

Thanks,
