Default any long range shooters here?

So I wanna get into long range shooting. I've decided to go with a .308. my goal is to shoot 600 yards. This is just my current (not very experience/educated) goal. I don't plan on using it for hunting.

I really like the Sako TRG 21. It's pricey but looks good and have heard great things about them. Winchester 700's are popular, also the Tikka T3 looks good.

I want a good rifle that I'll be happy within the long term. I don't want to get something and have to spend thousands fixing it up. I see it as a good long term investment in a rifle I'll always keep.

Thanks for your opinions/suggestions.

What do you want to be shooting at 600yds? A watermelon at 200yds is barely visible by eye. Obviously you will be spending a lot of time walking back and forth if you plan on setting targets. Keep in mind that you are also going to need a range finder, monster scope, & a shooting partner.

remington 700sps or pss is a good choice for a base rifle that will reach out to 1000yds and will not put a huge damper in your pocket book. it's also not a trophy rifle that you wouldnt want to drag around through the woods hunting. the market for ugrades on the remingtons is huge too. no limit to how ice you can make it.

Expensive hobby, expect to pay anywhere from 3,000 on up for a "decent" rifle/scope combo. High power/long range ranges are hard to come by, especially in and around urban areas.

Check out www.snipercentral.com

I shoot a 700PSS Remington in .308 The rifle can shoot better than I at 1000 yards. Every error you make shooting is magnified by the longer range.

I've done some range work with a Steyr SSG and it's a very nice rifle. Sub .5 MOA at 200 yards

Good optics are key, and the sky is the limit for their price.

Don't go blowing your load all at once. I'd probably get a Remington 700P (politically correct name for the PSS) or Savage 10FP, and spend the rest on the best optics you can afford. Both have good actions, and will give you a nice base for later upgrades if you so choose. I've seen both shoot sub .5 MOA out of the box. A lot of very expensive rifles use Remington 700 actions.. sub .25 MOA is achievable with a little work.

I'd be shooting with a buddy who's somewhat experienced. He recommended the sako to me. Fortunately we have places here within an hour drive where we can do some long range shooting. 600 yards is just my uneducated goal, but at first I don't necessarily need that full of a range.

The main decision for me now is to spend less and work my way up or get nice equipment to begin with. Generally I try to spend less on new hobbies, I own other guns, and this would be a keeper, so I don't mind considering the more expensive option.

will a rem 700 shoot just as well as a trg 22 or a r93 tactical? at least close enough? I'm training to shoot, not be a sniper, so I won't necessarily be lugging around nice equipment and risking damage to it. At least not like someone training to be a sniper...

thanks for the feedback guys.

If your going to spend over 1K for a .308 bolt gun you're going to have a nice piece. How much nicer than a sub 1K Remington is up to you.

I've never shot a TRG or the newer tactical Sako's.

The older Finn Bear Sako's are tack driver hunting rifles, that are finished extremely well. I wouldn't kick an Sako out of the safe.
