Any watch collectors here?

Whats the argument for quartz versus automatic as to which is better and why?

Maybe its a n00b question but I've never understood why some say automatic is better.
IMHO:

In the interest of absolute accuracy, despite changes in temperature, pressure, and shock resistance, quartz is "better." That is not to say that autos and hand winds are not accurate or durable - they are, but a quartz watch has fewer moving parts, and the construction is very simple, using plastic gears typically, making them "better" in ways that are not really an issue for something strapped to your wrist. An auto or handwind can be adjusted to be very, very accurate, and new watches from a quality maker are adjusted so right from the factory. Any older auto or handwind can be cleaned and adjusted by a watchmaker for accuracy.

One advantage mechanically driven watches have over their quartz counterparts is longevity. A decent auto or handwind will last far longer than your lifetime, while a quartz will wear out in a decade or two. An auto or handwind can be worked on for repair or improvement, while quartz is what it is - cheap and disposable. That is why expensive ($500+) quartz watches are kind of asinine. One drawback to a mechanical watch is you need to have it cleaned and oiled every five to ten years or so, which costs a little more than a new battery. The pay-off is a useable watch that will never wear out in your lifetime.

Seems like we have a lot of watch enthusiasts here/collectors. I'm looking for an automatic watch winder. Anyone have any recommendations as to which brands are good?

For daily use, I've got a 2001 Breitling Chronomat Blackbird, and I liken it in many ways to the S2000. It's sharp looking, reliable, well made, but not as recognized as some of the more common brands.

Also have an AP Royal Oak, a quartz Tag Heuer 2000 Chrono, an old Seiko Choronograph from the late '80s, a Honda watch from the Honda collection, one of the original Casio data banks from my middle school days, and a 20 some year old Mickey Mouse watch from my childhood.

My latest addition is a Tag Heuer Link Chronograph 2004 Senna Edition, limited edition of 2004 pieces worldwide. Something this group might be able to appreciate, due to Senna's involvement in Honda F1.
