Default any waverunner mechanics out there?

i have a 97 yamaha gp1200, and i've been troubleshooting this thing all week.

bottom line: it won't start.

first it was the battery (because the instrument panel was dead)
bought a new battery (instruments panel works again)
when i hit start, i hear a "thug", like the starter is trying to turn, but the motor won't.
i thought maybe the new battery needs more juice, so i charged it overnight.
now same "thug"

any suggestions?

Check the starter relay, trace it by following the battery cable into a sealed electrical box, it has two contacts and these get corroded over time hense a no start condition. This is about a $25 part, I had the same problem.

If that yields no joy, try placing a metal rod or pipe on the starter housing (if accessible) and tap gently on the pipe with a hammer while someone tries to start it. Often a starter motor will develop 'dead spots' over time, and a slight rap with a hammer can often free them. Obviously, you have to be careful not to hit the starter too hard because you may damage the housing, especially if it is a cast housing.

BTW, this trick also works great for cars. You'll still have to replace the starter, but at least you don't have to have it towed!
