anybody got Hamsters??
I got 2 dwarf hamsters, one gray/white, one dark grey/black. They're cute and everything but I got 2 questions, hopefully one of you guys have hamsters and can help me out. First question, how do you get them to Poop in the pooper box?? I bought them a litter box, and they don't use it for crap. Second, the white one always picks on the black on, it's soo annoyin at night when you hear the black one squeeking like a little B!tch because the white one's on top of him. The question is what exactly are they doing?? I really don't get it, it don't seem like their fighting, because none of them get hurt. They just squeek stop squeek and stop again. Are they **cking?? I think one of them is male and the other's female.
Unless the female's in heat, she won't be too receptive to the males attention (sound familiar?). The best thing for their cage would be a layer of cedar shavings. They will pick one corner of the cage to do their business in and it's pretty easy to clean up; just change the shavings every couple of weeks. The cedar shavings will help mask any odor, as well.
No, DO NOT use ceader shavings! The oils in ceader will cause them to get sick and die. Use bedding designed for them. Ask the people at the pet store but sometimes they do not know so don't use and wood chips/shavings. Try to use some reconstituted bedding made of newspapers or something from the pet store. About the poop. These guys will poop everywhere and you can't get them to poop in one place. Dwarf hamsters will poop and re-eat what they pooped to extract more nutrients the second time around. This is natural behavior. Urine on the other hand is another story. They are generally clean animals and if you've given them a place to do it they will eventually get in the habit of going there. You also should give them a cup as a dust bath to let them clean their coat. It's called Chinchilla Dust Powder or something like that. They like that alot. About the fighting. Hopefully you bought them from the same litter, or at least they have been spending time with each other since they were very young. If not I would suggest seperating them as they are aggressive and will fight. The squeaking you hear can be playful but keep an eye on them, at least for the first couple of weeks and if any blood is drawn split them up. Also unless you plan on making a business of selling hamsters I would keep the male and female seperate as I think the become sexually mature rather quickly and have the one of the shorter gestation periods of all mammals (17 days). If you have any other questions I'd be happy to help.

cool, thanks for your help guys, now I see that the male gives the female a lot of attention, and the female doesn't want it. That's what causes the squeeking, haha no wonder the male keep licking the other one's privates hahahah.
A couple years ago I *initially* bought two male syrian hamsters. All was fine, they played nicely and ran around their huge cage. Then one day, I came to my room and they were having $ex! I was like..."OMG!! I have gay hamsters!!!!"
I was really depressed and shocked to find out that I bought homosexual hamsters....
After a week, one of my hamsters started getting fatter and fatter....then i realized the pet store sold me a male AND a female, not two males. *grumble*
Anyhow, they were both from the same litter so watch out for breeding....one day you're going to come home and find 20 hamsters squirming around....
Good luck
Cheers,
Bryan

Cedar shavings never seemed to harm my hamsters; I guess things have changed in the last 40 years. At least I was right about the female rebuffing the male's attention unless she is in estrous.
