I dig, at least the concept - keeping the site name on the left and the topic on the right, however I'd choose a different font face/color for the image on the right to go along with the rest of the site.

Being a paid Graphic Designer, I really wouldn't get too excited about the banner cthree. Dropping the opacity of the pic and adding a drop shadow to "FORUMS" is not very creative in my opinion. Try to think out out the box....

it's okay
honestly, i think it's a step up - but could be better
top down would SURELY be a good thing to fix
it's a good start, and i think the idea is right - i'd just like to see additional comps as the execution is perhaps not ideal

well layton pretty much says it all, plus I don't understand why the 2 sides of the banner seem to come from a completely different world : on one side you have very simple graphics (white background - that's good / violet mid 90's typeface - that's bad), and on the other half, you have this FADED pic (fade = opposite of strong, right?), with a different typeface in a different color with a different treatment (drop shadow...arggh).
