Default Anyone here using Magic Jack or similar device?

I'm thinking about getting the Magic Jack or a similar device. Has anyone here used it? Is it reliable? Do you have to leave your computer on all the time in order for it to work? Are there better options besides a Magic Jack or similar devices?

Just based on first glance, it's nothing but VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) on the cheap. You can upgrade your Skype, Yahoo, or Google Chat accounts to do this. AFAIK, you have to leave some appliance, probably your computer, on.

For Magic Jack, your computer always has to be on.

I don't know what your budget is like but for less than $200 you can get Ooma. I've been using it for over 2 years. It acts as a gateway device, so it connects directly to your cable or dsl modem, then you would connect that to your phone. Heres a picture below how it works.

Before Ooma I was using AT&T and paying like $20 per month for land line service. I love the model for Ooma, you pay for the hardware and nationwide calling is FREE, however, additional features cost extra, but its relatively inexpensive. Its paid itself off twice fold already. I got my boss to use it as well and he loves it. Not sure if you dial internationally, but they have really good international plans, I get 1000 minutes for $10 for calling to China and Thailand.

heres a link on amazon for the Ooma Telo, not sure how this one works but it should be the same, I have the older model Ooma Hub.

That's pretty sweet. Now if they can figure out a way to adapt it to a cell phone. Verizon, AT&T and the like are purely ripping just for service.

I could not get over having the computer on all the time so I passed. Did the cheapie plan with Vonage and it has been great so far just in case you are looking at other options.

They actually do have iPhone and Android apps, you can download the app which is $10 then you can dial out using 3G or 4G through the Ooma app, when my phone was jailbroken I had this app, but I never got it to fully work. Maybe you need the purchased app? but overall the reviews for the app were bad on the apple app store.

So I guess if it all worked, you could have the very minimum voice plan and dial out via the app for free. Thus saving even more money.
