Default Anyone know about Jet Skis? Need Help.

In the market with 3 other buddies to get some. To my understanding there are really only 5 companies that make them: see doo, polaris, kawasaki, yamaha, and honda?

I heard see dooand polaris is the worst, yamaha the best, kawasaki is ok but on and off with making marine stuff. Honda too new to trust in marine, which I think may be crap.

I have heard mixed things about 2 vs. 4 stroke. What are the benifits other than smog and weight? I thought it was the gas and oil mixtures but I guess most 2 stroke engines now have oil injection.

Any advice would be awesome.

Thanks in advance!

Dave

I own a Kawasaki 900STS 3-seater, it is a three cylinder two-stroke. Very fun craft, not super fast, but is strong enough to tow a wakeboarder or waterskier.

Sea-Doo quality used to now be so great, but I have heard they have come a long way (4tec Supercharged...FAST!!!)

Polaris - don't know much about them since they are not widely available around me in NJ

Yamaha - I have heard they used to be the best, but with all the new 4 stokes coming along, Sea-Doo and Honda are swiftly catching up.

Kawasaki - Well I own it, had it for 3 years now, no problems at all (knock-on-wood), the engines are pretty good, but the hulls are not as good as Sea-Doo's in terms of handling

Honda - new to the market, fast, turbos have proven to be good thus far, but very expensive

I would definitely go 4 stroke, they run cleaner, quieter, and now have the power to keep with most 2-strokes. I think they are much more fuel efficient too (don't quote me on that though)

Oh yeah, I owned a 1997 Sea Doo GTi before the Kawi, it was pretty good, handled much better than the Kawi, but was not as powerful with its 2 cyclinder 2-stroke

Do you have a hitch on you s2000 or use another mode of towing?

Rode one of these a while back at my Uncle's house in Palm Beach. Most fun thing next to my s2k.

He said he has never had a problem with it.

I have to correct 2002S2k and let you know that the 2 Strokes are much more fuel efficient.

Sea-Doo's are the most nimble and best riding Jet-Skis out there. They have been plagued in recent years with several problems that caused to suck water into the motor.

I continue to buy Sea-Doos because the ride is un-beatably fast and comfortable especially on the XP.

I do strongly suggest that you buy one from a reputable dealer and always get the extended warranty from the factory.

Have fun and be careful out there.

Remember , these things don't have brakes.

I was at a see doo dealer and they bashed them! They were a dealer for all of them except Honda. Not sure if it was a comission thing but did not have much good to say about see doo or polaris. He showed me the back where they do repairs and there were about 8 sea doos, 2-3 polaris, 1-2 yamahaa/kawasaki. May not mean anything but scared me off.

Also why in your sig do you have "money pit" next to your sea doo?

I have a 2000 GP 1200R Yamaha waverunner and it still runs like a champ with over 150 hours on it and many trips jumping waves in the ocean! I run it in a fresh water lake everytrip home from the ocean to clean it out! If I bought my waverunner now I would probably look into the 4 stroke models if I planned to keep it for awhile!

I bought a Kawasaki STX12F last summer new. It's a 4 stroke and runs beautifully. It's very quiet, has tons of torque and will pull a skiier up easily. The Jet-Ski and trailer went for about $10K, both new. Insurance runs about $300/year. With the 15 gal tank, you can really run all day without having to gas up. It has the tach, speedo, hour meter, hour tripmeter odometer and fuel gauge, plus a number of warning tones that never come on unless they need to. It tracks well at speed and is till agile enough to spin out or carve a turn nicely. Of course, it doesn't handle as well as the smaller 1 & 2 seaters, but for a 3 seater it's pretty nimble.

I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a 4 stroke that is easy to handle, but still very fast. I've topped her out just above 60 with about 1/3 tank of gas in smooth water.
