Depends what area you're in. They're in high demand RIGHT now, but since they are, it's become such a good field to go in there, that by the time you get out the market will be more flooded and they won't be in such high demand anymore. Right now, pharmacists are walking out of school making anywhere from 60K+ their first year. And most pharmacy schools are difficult to get into, so start looking now. Look around there for the classes you'd need if you went there for all four years, and let that be your guide for classes to take so most of your classes transfer.

If you wanna know where the moneys at in the pharmaceutical market its at the pharmaceutical companies. And they dont hire eckerd or walmart pharmacists, they hire biochemists and neurologists, and they make 200K+ working for those companies. Being a pharmacist is very limited to what u can do and potential (all u do is dispense the drug), I suggest going for m.s or phd in biochemistry, microbiology (or related) if you like the idea of designing drugs, that is where the money is at. Im studying biomedical engineering myself. good luck.

Very good advice so far. The future of drugs are in molecular biology and genetics. If you are looking at working in the pharmaceutical industry I would recommend taking a look into those sciences. You will need an extremely strong background in math and science, especially chemistry. The industry is very cut-throat so you must be qualified and stand-out form the crowd to get the $200k+ a year, very few will make that much. Talk with an academic advisor and I'm sure you could find a few pharmaceutical students to talk with also. If you are only in it for the money though then I don't recommend anything to do with medicine or drugs. You have to be dedicated to your job or you'll burn-out very quickly. If you are looking for money then get an MBA.

To answer your question the average salary of a pharmacist depends on so many different variable that it would be hard to give you an accurate amount. Most pharmacists starting out will make about $35-40k a year and as you gain experience and move up in the ranks a salary in excess of $80k a year is not uncommon.

cuz in cali a fresh out of skool pharma cist makes like 80grand. but most of those spot filled already. im wondering if other places are high paying like that too. im still an incoming freshmen, remember that. i dont want to waste my time on something that will result in a change of major.

what can an mba do for me. is that mostly like business admin? cuz i was thinking about that. but they're not in high demand are they?

you dont need a business admin degree to go for MBA, your bachelors can be in anything, engineering, biology etc and u can still apply for mba (mba is for graduate school). and mba wont necessarily make u alot of money. if u want money go to law school after you get your bachelors, or if u dont like that, then med school (u can never go wrong with med school).

If you're thinking of a pharmacist as a retail pharmacist, i.e. walgreens or rite-aid, etc., then they are still in very high demand and generally get about $100K/yr coming out of school with a large ($20-30K) signing bonus for a 2 year term. At least in the SF, LA, SD areas. There is generally not much room for advancement so you get kinda stuck doing what you do which is answering people's lame questions about what kind of aspirin they should take and have people yell at you when you can't give them meds because they don't have any refills left. You should really get a school internship at one before you fully commit.

However, there are lots of other avenues you can take with a Pharm.D instead of just retail.

As a freshman, you're gonna waste time figuring out what you want to do if you don't already know, that's just life.

Also, you can't pick what you want to do based on how much you're gonna make, you will hate your life if you do. Find something you like, which may also happen to pay well, and go with that.
