Good on ya Mike! I opted to suck up the unpleasant side effects of Zyban because I just couldn't quit on my own. I did find that the meds did help me get into alternative habits. But if the side effects are interfering on an ongoing basis, maybe talk to your doc. S/he might be able to change the dosage, although I'm not sure how much longer you'll be on it.
Next Friday will be my 10 month anniversary of quitting. I still have days when smelling a cigarette seems like the most awesome thing in the world, but fortunately my attention span has been so short lately that I usually forget about it pretty quickly.

Good luck!
Well done Cheryl! Hope to still be smoke free 10 months from now...

I'm sure I'll benefit from the short attention span as well and will be able to distract myself with something shiny if I do feel like smoking.

I smoked for 10 years and quit with Chantix in 2 weeks. Never had another smoke. I started taking the first couple doses that allow you to keep smoking and I started having crazy ass dreams. After the second week I didnt even want to go to sleep anymore, much less smoke a cigarette. I also started getting nauseous when I tried to smoke. I think this is what makes your mind want to quit. It associates smoking with nausea. I didnt think the Chantix would work because I worked around a ton of smokers and they would always light up right next to me. I had to smell it everyday, but after a while it didnt even bother me. What is weird is that I remember how much I used to love the smell of cigarettes and now they smell like shit. Which is what I presume it smells like to all the non (never) smokers out there. Either way, I spent a ton of money for Chantix and used less than half of it. Worked like a charm though.

Good luck to both of you. I think I have posted my story in brief somewhere on here but oh well. I smoked from about 15 til 25ish and ever since college I was at a pack a day. My office, every male smoked and that was 5/7 employees. They also let people smoke at their desks so the whole office can become a plume. Anyway I had gotten sick for a few days (i get it every year chronic brochitis) and after that I just sai fck it and stopped. The habit breaking for me was the hardest part since so much of my day focused on smoke breaks, smoking on the drive to and from work, smoking at home while surfing s2ki etc. I found that cold turkey was the best way though because even with gums and drugs and other substitutes, your body is still getting that fix of nicotine. One my system was clean of nicotine it became much easier. other way keep if up! It is definately the healthy decision!

edit: I am 18 days away from my 1year of no smoking!

Thanks bud!

Girlfriend is buying me a new TV and letting me mount it in the bedroom when I've been smoke free for a month. Previously wasn't allowed to have one in there because she said bedrooms aren't for movies and TV. Pffffft.

Instead of smoking, FAP*. It'll help you keep from smoking and you'll be a happier person.....
Potential side affects are blindness and hair on palms.
I can do something about that vision loss Raj.
you're on your own with the hairy palm. But at least it'll give you a better grip.

I know eh? Actually she LOVES $$$$$$. Sits and watches it sooooo intently. Every now and again she'll run out of stuff and will request that I download some new torrents for her.

She prefers the stuff with a solid story, but I keep telling her that cuts into the sex parts of the movies.

UPDATE!

Not smoking is going quite well. The first few days I wanted a smoke but ate food instead. Then I just chugged a glass of water every time I wanted a smoke. at Day 5 I was still having urges to smoke, and decided to have a drag of a friend's. It tasted TERRIBLE and that immediately kicked my desire and urges to have a smoke at all. I'm presently on day 8 without a cigarette (aside from that one drag on Day 5) and I've got no urges. I'm still taking the pills because I'm supposed to for 8-12 weeks (seriously?) though I'll probably stop at week 5. It's not too expensive, roughly $120/month - which is a lot less than I used to spend on cigarettes.

My dreams have been very vivid, though not really scary. Here's a quick rundown on some of them:

Dream 1
- Had a baby with my girlfriend and spent the entire dream at a house I've never seen in real life, with my girlfriend recovering in bed. I was taking care of the baby and there was a constant stream of family members (some currently alive and some dead) who came by the house to see our new son. I haven't seen the Time Traveler's Wife, but my girlfriend thought it was funny when I woke up because I told her I saw our son and he was beautiful. I woke up from that night's sleep (roughly 13 hours!) feeling more tired than I ever have. I seriously have an appreciation for the amount of work involved with having a baby. In real life I napped the next day and still went to bed at 8pm for another 12 hour night of sleep.

Dream 2
- Went back in time to 1996 and hung out around New Jersey. Pretty much just spent roughly a week driving around, whitewater rafting, snowmobiling and bicycling around some nice neighborhoods. At the end of this week (in dream time) I pulled out my Blackberry Bold and couldn't get a signal. Some dude asked me where I got the crazy phone and I told him "From Rogers. It's been out for at least a year." He showed me his old school Nokia phone, and I said "Dude, that phone is like pre year-2000, time for a new one." His response was "It [i]is/[is] pre-2000. It's 1996." I took this information very well and was upset that I had to leave and missed my chance to see my grandmother (who is now dead) but lived in New Jersey her whole life, and was alive in 1996.

Dream 3
- Do you know how when you're dreaming that you're in a fight, no matter how hard you try, you can't punch with any strength? Well in this dream I got in a fight with a never-ending line of dudes and I absolutely destroyed everyone. I was picking people up and throwing them into others, punching people in their faces and bodies and was getting some serious results. At some point a guy sneaked up behind me and I fired off a punch over my shoulder and made contact (nice move, very realistic *cough cough*) and in real life, punched my solid wood headboard of my bed VERY hard. It woke up both me and my girlfriend but neither of us were quite lucid enough to understand what just happened. After awkward near-sleep talking to eachother for about 20 seconds, we both passed back out.

Dream 4
- I was extremely wealthy and owned several houses, including a massive cottage and the lake it was located on. Basically I was living the real life of my girlfriend's uncle who is extremely wealthy. I had a huge boat and was living luxuriously, with not a care in the world. I miss that dream. It was completely uneventful, I just spent my entire night having a great time without a worry.

Dream 5
- In this dream I visited 7-11 about 20 times to buy Bacon and Egg McMuffins. It must've been a magic McDonald's/7-11 hybrid, but I didn't any questions. Afterwards I decided I wasn't hungry any longer, and went on a mission to buy sunglasses for less than $30. I went to a Canadian drug store chain called Shoppers Drug Mart, and found that they only had like 6 pairs of glasses, and half of them were excessively oversized women's glasses that cover half their faces. I turned super-cop and busted a girl trying to steal a pair of them. After I pointed her out to the staff, they took her down hard and directed me to another store that had more glasses. I spent most of my dream in heavy traffic driving to the other store that that had a better selection of crappy sunglasses. I don't think I ever actually got a pair :-(

Dream 6
- I took a gravel road to a friend's house, and decided to park and walk the rest of the way because there were too many potholes. For some reason I left the top down overnight, and stayed over. When I woke up I walked to where my S2000 was, and for some reason it was red (mine is black), and the stereo, shift knob, and center console had been removed. The driver door was sitting on the ground, leaning against the car. I sat inside and tried my key and it started! Sombody had stolen my car, and replaced it with an NFR, - and very curteously swapped the locks, ignition switch, and ECU so I could still drive the red one with my key. I drove to the friends house, and was upset. His neighbor then drove up in a home-made roadster-type thing, and told me he was sorry for my loss but that I could have his car when he got back from the store. The only specific thing that stood out about his heap was a monster engine, and the same surround sound stereo I have in my living room at home. Sweet!

We'll see how the rest of the nights continue, though the crazy dreams are becoming less common, and less memorable.
