Default Asteroid Could Hit Earth in 878 Years

Had me a little worried there for a minute - thought they said 87 years! The story:

By PAUL RECER, AP Science Writer

WASHINGTON - A new look at an asteroid orbiting the sun shows it could possibly smash into the Earth with the explosive force of millions of tons of TNT. But experts say the potential impact is still 878 years away, time enough for the speeding space rock to alter its course.

Named 1950 DA, the asteroid

Those are only estimates, I think. I've heard of the Earth getting pulled closer to the Sun by the sun's gravitational force making the Earth start to melt over 1,000 yrs away. So no worries for us. Just for the future. Hopefully the Armageddon will make a new fresh Earth if that's true.

hmmm, if only we could cryogenically freeze Bruce Willis so he can save the world in 878 years.

Jezz, I'm not worried about 87 years either. I'll be statistically dead in less than 30.

They had orbital stations around the earth in Starship Troopers to destroy them (but the big one still got through)

Thanks for the news. I love hearing about this kind of stuff. If anyone finds links to the calculations and detailed scientific opinions, please post them.

Does anyone think we (the human race) will make it to 2880? Sadly, a true "global/earth threat" might just be what the world needs to wake the F up and stop killing ourselves off.

Lots of "stuff" could hit us in 800+ years......
