Did you guys consider this car before buying the s2000? I think performance wise its a great value for the price. Looks, however.... its like a beatle-on-crack. Anyone test drive one? How does the handling compare?

No comparision in my books.

I think it's a yuppie version of a beetle crossed with a miata.

Slee909

My decision came down to being between the TT Roadster and the S2K. I wasn't even in the market for a car when I saw the S2K at a dealer. After driving it, I thought it would be nice to try a convertible for a while. After that, I started looking around at the available options.

The Boxster I was already familiar with. The Z3 and SLK lasted one test drive each. I was actually quite taken by the TT. A lot of my driving is done around town so it is at low revs. The TT does have more torque at low revs. Unlike the S2K, its power delivery comes low. YOu have to drive an S2K whereas you can simply putt along in a TT (compare the number of times you need to change gears and you will know what I mean)

In comparison to the S2000.

TT is considerably more comfortable and easy to drive fast
Easy to upgrade for more power
Probably a more prestigious marque

S2000 is more exciting performer
Handling is razor sharp in comparison to the TT Roadster which is a bit soft
Cheaper to buy and to insure

Again, a choice where you can't really lose either way. Happy driving!!

The TT is, in fact, a Beetle on crack. It has lot's of styling panache, but not much in the way of performance cajones, IMHO.

no need to get mad at me over the post. i made the right choice and am very happy with my honda. my decision came down to either the s2k or 330i. however in west la, where the 3-series is more common than the civic, i ultimately sacrificed luxury for performance and uniqueness. I had never conidered the TT, but had recently noticed a lot of them in the parking garage at work, i checked it up on line, and performance seems comparable. Also for the price, i paid 3g over sticker, i dont think theres anywhere on the westside that sells for sticker or under, so at 36k my s2k and a TT would be at the same price. I had never driven one, just wanted some perspective

Ok, you're forgiven. Just don't do it again!

The first thing I thought of on seeing the TT was that car Homer Simpson designed when his long lost brother put him in charge of the auto company. It was sort of Ed Roth/George Barris menagerie/nightmare of glass bubbles and fins.

Mind you, that car sent Homer's brother broke. Even a number of TT's falling over and killing their drivers hasn't done much harm to Audi.

slee909, I had the opportunity to drive the TT before I purchased my S2k. Here is my comparison:

The Audi had:
Good handling
Comfortable seats
Really cool looking dash
Auto climate control
Power seats
Softer ride
Some cargo room (Coupe)
Reasonalbe horspower

The Audi did not have:
Great handling
0-60 in the mid 5's
Honda reliability
Cutting edge technology
RWD (I drove only the FF)
Perfect short throw shifter
An amazingly stiff chassis
Incredible great sounding exhaust note.

I even compared the cars nose to nose and while the Audi does look like a beetle on crack, the S2k just has the classic long nose roadster styling.

Also, Audi takes the same engine and sells it in just about everything from a 150 HP (Beetle) to 225 HP (TT Quattro) which to me is a marketing thing. Honda's engine is unique to the S2000.

You made the right choice.
