While I think that the officer should have used a different approach to taking care of the squirrel (E.G. putting it in a shoe-box or something and releasing it into the wild), I think a lot of people are misunderstanding what the cop was trying to do and that was to make sure nothing happens to anyone.

The scenario would be different if a kid was bit by said "rabid" squirrel and then the parents would just end up suing the school. So instead, the parents are going to sue for endangering their kids livelihood since they didn't let the squirrel do it's own thing and now they are "scarred for life". Just one of those incidents where you just need to move on and deal with it.

Perhaps the squirrel was rabid and the cop was trying to protect the children?
No way! Another possible aspect to his story people disregard because the video doesn't spell it out for them. SHOCKER.

I'm surprised some of you folks in this thread, virtually squealing and whining like the kids in the video (who, may I point out, still sounded scared shitless as the squirrel so much as moved a millimeter in their direction).
Yes it was surely rabid, as it sat completely docile and calm infront of the officer. Squirrels unlike a lot of creatures, never seem to be too paranoid of humans. They generally enjoy "playing" (or at least they seem to think they're playing) with humans, and run around them. Maybe you've never been to a park or anything, but running up to/around people is pretty much standard squirrel behavior (at least here in CA). I'll make sure to pepper spray every dog I come in contact with, because you know, he could be Kujo.

Yeah It's very rare that a squirrel becomes rabid, and the squirrel wasn't doing anything to make so don't think it was rabid.

I don't understand why the cop was too retarded to use a broom to push it away or something. They use pepperspray on 250lb men, it was probably a little much for a 5oz squirrel.

Wow seriously? I love how everyone makes a big deal out of everything. The press will take anything and try to make a story out of it.

Abusive cops is a big deal. Whether it be a human, dog, or squirrel is kind of irrelevant. He is paid with the peoples money to protect them, he did no good for the people and instead pissed off a bunch of people by abusing a curious baby animal.

good news is - it was taken to animal control where it was cleaned up and released back to the wild.
Most people know nothing about wild animals and easily make assumptions such as rabies is commonplace. I think he did a good job. I am sure he was dispatched out to the school. He is not animal control and probably has no experience with something like this. Once the officer arrives it is expected that he take control of the situation. All eyes and video phones are on him. Also pepper spray is not only
non lethal but the effects are short term.

I did not see the part where he stomped the wild animal into a grease spot.
