Default bar essentials

if I want to start building up a small bar at home, what are some of the essential liquors I must have (brands too)?

I know there are some serious drinkers out there!

Rum is for women, so stock some FOR the women (Malibu).

To be a man, you've got to drink the man, Jack Daniels.

Absolut's good, but StoliO is better (read: popular with the ladies)

Hmmmmmmmmmm....
I would say get the essentials 1 quart of each:
1. Whiskey- Canadian Club
2. Vodka- Absolut
3. Rum- Bacardi light
4. Gin-Bombay
You can then pick up some extras like vermouth, Kahlua, Baileys and some mixers.

Good Vodka - Grey Goose, Sky. Absolut is overpriced for what it is. Some of their flavored vodkas are good though (citron, et al).
Cheap Vodka - Smirnoff (for mixing)
Flavored Vodka - I keep lime vodka and blueberry vodka - both good for mixing with lemonade.

Rum - Bacardi, Bacardi Limon, Captain Morgan, Bacardi 151 if you like things that burn

Gin - Bombay Sapphire

Whiskey - JD. Some cheap crap if you like mixing (whiskey + water, whiskey and coke).

Light stuff - peach schnapps, amaretto, bailey's irish creme,

Shots: goldschlager, black zambucca, tequila rose, a good vodka, a good tequila (I hate the stuff so I can't recommend), apple pucker (chick shot).

Mixers - coke, water, tonic, lemonade/pink lemonade, red bull, orange juice, cranberry juice, 7up or sprite, mt dew (ok, maybe this is just me!), daiquiri/margarite mix (don't forget the blender!).

Some wine would be good, too (ask the wine experts around here...). Consider a Cognac (such as Hennessy) if your friends are "high class". Have some beer (a mix - budweiser, heineken, guinness, etc) and malt beverages (smirnoff ice, etc) for non-liquor types.

I think that'd be a good start...

mmm, sounds good.

ok, I admit, I like to drunk malibu rum/coke...I know, its not "real" rum, but I like coconut flavored stuff!

I got some Seagrams Gin...yuck, nasty!...so then I got some Tanqueray...um, not much better. But I do notice you all recommend bombay? How's it better than the other two?

It doesn't taste like crap!

Actually, most gin reminds me of pine sol... but Bombay Sapphire is pretty good.
