The Beatles are overrated.
Now I am not a huge fan of the Beatles obviously. They have lots of hits, the were incredibly relevant and were quite the musical force for many years.
I have heard probably 90% of their catalog. My dad had lots of Beatles stuff that he played on cross country car trips when I was a kid, although he liked Buddy Holly better. But I have heard him say and others say that Paul and John were such great songwriters and lyricists."
"She loves you, yeah yeah yeah."
"Shake it up baby now. Shake it baby. Twist and Shout. Twist and shout. C'mon, C'mon C'mon baby now."
"She's got a ticket to ride. She's got a ticket to ri-hi-hide. She's got a ticket to ride and she don't care."
"We all live in a Yellow submarine. Yellow Submarine. Yellow Submarine."
I have heard deeper lyrics in one of those Free Credit Roport.com jingles. Some are catchier tunes too.
There is some deeper stuff: I saw her standing there, Hey Jude, Yesterday, etc, but lots of it is simple hook repetitive fluff yet they are supposed to be this giant deal.
Were they good? Yeah. (yeah yeah!)
Were they relevant? Sure.
Were they influential? Uh huh?
Are they as great as they are made out to be? I don't know. I think people have to lay off the crack pipe.
Douchenozzle extraordinaire Simon Cowell says they would not have made it anywhere on his talent show.
So there it is. The Beatles are probably slightly better than average. I'd rather listen to Bob Marley. His stuff holds up way better.

+1 effin hate the Beatles.
They are definitely one of those bands that people get all up in arms about for no good reason. I mean I like music just as much as the next guy, if not more, but its just music for christ's sake. God forbid someone has a different opinion
I like some of their songs but not all. I think they're overhyped as well. With that said...
You have to look at the era. They were revolutionary for their time. Now we see them as generic lyrics... Back then the sound and what was said was something different. Muisic is about reading between the lines and interpretting what's said to reflect feelings and emotions. If you just look at the lyrics as words instead of what the meaning/feeling behind them is... All music is just words like the beatles.

Overrated? Probably. But their music still holds up much better than 90% of the crap being produced today.
