My vote is for Austin, too, as long as you don't have a yellow stook - we already have enough of them here

It would take a lot to get me to move anywhere else!

No can't imagine anyone wanting to move to Austin. Twisty roads, top down weather, music capitol of the world, food, beautiful coeds, beautiful coeds, beautiful coeds... damn I've got to get that cat scan.

Think San Diego is so great?

You can't judge a whole city based on one guys choice of neighborhood. All large cities have problems but those are mainly contained within specific areas. I've not had a problem.

Not San Diego. My wife left town just after that Mc D's shooting. California? - um - no. I'm sure there's a lot of good poeple there but sure seems like a lot of wacks also. No offence to anyone here.

Simple answer: IRVINE, CA

There really isn't anywhere else that I feel safe walking around at night or parking my car anywhere with the top down, etc. It's also a good spot for IT/tech people since it's "the next silicon valley", it's got a zillion trees, smooth wide roads, decent people raising families, a university near-by, lots of shops, restaurants and eateries of all kinds, etc. The only downside is that *in* Irvine, shops and whatnot close fairly early (say, 9 or 10) except for the few late-nighters like Taco Bell, Denny's, In-an-Out, etc. However within 10 minutes there are a LOT of things to do, hotspots, shopping centers etc. You have the busiest theatre in the nation if not the world, the Irvine Spectrum. There's the Block at Orange. There's South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. The nice beaches of Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach are 10-15 minutes drive away on the surface streets.

When I go anywhere else, on trips, to LA or even other cities in Orange County, I get the feeling anything other than Irvine is "ghetto". But I'm over it. But bottom line is, if you're looking for a place to have a good tech job, and be in a good position to raise a family and be successful and be in a safe and pretty place, Irvine's the way to go.

Now don't come stampeding over here!

Phoenix! I'm a programmer for American Express here where there are plenty of IT jobs. The pay is not quite as good as California but the cost of living is much less! It's really not unbearable here during summer despite the perception of it being hotter than hell. Of course, I've been here for about 12 years and I've become accustomed to the heat . After all, us IT guys don't seem to go out much anyway. We're afraid of that big bright sphere in the sky.

Naw, you don't want to move to San Diego.

Yeah, move to some other nice, sunny warm place, it's way too crowded here anyway!
