Best city to live in...
I agree with Tom. San Diego sucks big time. Expect overpriced gasoline (~$2.00/gal for premium!), rolling blackouts, and econobox condominiums starting at 350K. San Diego's only saving grace is cheap, tasty Mexican food (try anyplace ending in -berto's).
P.S. Avoid Irvine--it's a planned community wasteland designed to suck the juice out of life.

forgetting the US business for a minute..i'll vote for komagane,nagano-ken,japan.....best little burg i've ever had the pleasure of living in...it's a lot like calif with wonderfully friendly and outgoing residents....one or two stock deals click and i'm outta here![best of all, you have access to all the cool cars the US has decided we can't drive...great buckwheat noodles to boot!]
Man,
I really didn't particularly enjoy my time in Palo Alto. So much so that I turned down a Sand Hill Road job just to get out of there. What is the ratio 5 guys to every decent looking girl? Ugghhh.
The weather and the roads were nice. Maybe I'll move to Vancouver or San Francisco in the next little while. We'll see.

Of course, alot depends on what you are looking for...
I like it here, for a big city, the setting is drop dead gorgeous and the open space is nearby and plentiful. I live smack in the middle of the city and have spotted bobcats in the Marin headlands after running across the GG bridge from my apt- that's how close near wilderness is...but if my job allowed me to live anywhere, I'd live in the sunny beautiful intermountain west- Flagstaff, AZ; Boise, Durango, CO, etc towns big enough to have colleges and the good stuff that goes with that, nice scenery, lots of nice, young folks doing outdoor stuff. Flag and Boise both have lots of IT jobs for their size- don't know about Durango...
In Az, I like Tucson over phoenix- the latter is too smoggy and sprawling for my taste. SD is nice.
Besides FL you might think about other SE cities- again in the medium size category, Wilmington NC has a great climate- farthest site N on the east coast where palms grow naturally (actually that is true of Bald head island and sunset beach, but close enough...)

I really wouldn't consider FL. All the heat and humidity. Misquitos and bugs. Old people who should not be driving. Tourists who don't know where they are going. No, FL is not where you want to be.
