Crap, forgot the Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl proved he was more then capable of being more then just the drummer for Nirvana, not sure how I missed that since it was in my first post

Ohh yeah, one of my all time favorite debutes:

Nashville Pussy - Let Them Eat Pussy

The track, Fried Chicken and Coffee, was actually nominated for a Grammy.

Yeah! I remember when that album came out, I was totally blown away. All my friend thought I was crazy for listening to it. Then almost exactly one year later, people couldn't get enough of STP.

As for rap? NWA - Straight Outta Compton.
I remember driving around in my 1st car (89 Lude) crankin the STP-CORE tape. I still have that in my wide rotation of car discs....14 years later!

You first get the sense of what is about to transpire when song one just opens up " I am smellin like a rose....". I was speechless. I mean Nirvana had already debut'd SLTS, as did Pearl Jam on the radio w/Evenflow but STP was outside that Seattle thing being LA guys. Sorry, memories of that summer of '92 are flooding my brain. Rock took a seriously hard 45 deg turn that summer.

For the guy that said Radiohead "Bends"...Spin mag said that was the best Sophomore album of all time (or top 5). I agree. For those who aren't into today's radiohead you might like "Bends". The rookie debut was "Pablo".

I think when you look at the "Greatest" of anything you need to look at how it impacted the music scene and pop culture in general. In that respect, I would list:
1) Nirvana- Nevermind was their first big label effort and it TOTALLY changed the music scene. It killed metal and ushered in the "grunge" era. It also made it cool to have hard, guitar driven songs with intelligent lyrics. Which brings up..
2) Pearl Jam- "Ten" is IMO a MUCH better album than Never mind, both musically and lyrically. Veder is has a better and stronger voice than Kurt. While they were a couple of months later than Nirvana i.e. Smells like Teen Spirit was a radio staple while Pearl Jam was still a Buzz Bin player, Pearl Jam contributed heavily to grunge movement. All in all, a better album, but Nirvana had more impact
3) NWA- straight Outta Compton. Biggie, 2Pac, JayZ, etc wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Eazy, Cube, Red, Yella, and Dre. The best effort any of them has put out either as a group or solo artist. Like Nirvana, TOTALLY changed the scene.
4) Public Enemy- It Takes a Nation of Millions. The 1st "Black Power" intelligent/controversial album. ChuckD had one of the most powerful and distinct voices in Hip Hop and when combined with Teminator X's beats and haunting backround noises, the songs were lethal. They changed the Hip Hop scene all around. Prior to them, rap was fun and for playing to, but had no message for its listeners. They influenced a new crop of "intelligent" rappers i.ae. 3rd base, Black Watch, Intelligent Hoodlum, Jungle Berthas, De La Soul, Poor Righteous Teachers, King Sun, etc. They even made some of the old schoolers i.ae. LL Cool JO, re-think their approach to hip hop. Now, Fear of a Black Planet is better album, but didn't have the impact as Nations, ba/ca it wasn't the 1st.
Rage Against The Machine- self titled? While Faith No More was the one of the first Rock/Rap combos, they didn't have any impact and were gone as soon as they came. Rage on the other hand, had socially conscious lyrics and UNBELIEVABLE guitar driven backround music. LP is merely picking up where rage left off. They're good, but Rage broke new ground.
Depeche Mode- People Are People. This album was the leader and forerunner in the 2nd "English Invasion" bringing goth/new wave scene to the states.
Sex Pistols- Nevermind the Bullocks.
Lenny Kravitz- Let Love Rule. He's had better albums, but he was the 1st to bring back the 70's rock sound (not the Strokes). As a side note, I actually saw him opening for The Cult and he was BOO'd off stage...now look at him. He paved the way for the Strokes, Jet, the whole retro rock revival that we're hearing now.
NIN-Pretty Hate Machine. 1st to have a hard edged synth sound.

Other worthwhile debut albums:
The Cure- Standing on a Beach
Foo Fighters- self titled (?)
New Order- Faith

The Refreshments are awesome! Remember Banditos? Hysterical!

They did, however, have one other album, "The Bottle & Fresh Horses" released in 1997. IMHO, it is every bit as good as their first... not a bad song on it.
Give your ID card to the border guard, the alias says you're Cpt. Jean Luc Picard...Classic!!

I had no idea they had another album, I don't think it was released here... hmm Limewire to the rescue!

I did make a mistake with FNM, thier first album was with a differant singer, Mike Patton joined for the second album, the first is often overlooked, and its thought of as the first.

Tenblade, good call on the Cure and New Order..

Thanks MC,
I think Disinigration is a much better album (BTW, their new album is REALLY good....very different sound for them). Regarding New Order, did you like Joy Division?
Another couple of GREAT debut albums:
Alice In Chains- Dirt
Soundgarden

BTW, MC if you like DAve Grohl, get Probot.

I liked Disintegration better too, only like a few Joy Division tunes.

Probot is great, and your last 2 additions, how did I forget those??

This thread is like reliving my youth!

Other notables, first Weezer, and Blind Melon
