Default Best file protection (encryption) program?

I'm looking to encrypt some of my files on my computer, and I was wondering if you can recommend anything for personal use? Not too expensive, effective, and simple to use. It'll be even better if the files were unrecoverable if I forgotten the password (I don't want anyone accessing those files).

Thanks.

Windows 2000 comes with NTFS 5 which has built-in encryption. Can anyone confirm that its available in the Professional edition (am revising Server for an exam at the moment) ?
Microsoft website will probably confirm it ...

Try PGPFile - you can find it at www.pgp.com should be strong enough for your needs.

If you're after decent quality encryption, don't rely on simple short password protection. It's far too easy to break. About the worst is stuff like the password option on zip files - you can crack this using brute force approaches in no time on a modern PC.

Admitedly, I have not tried to crack any Win2k boxes, but the NT4 ones were so easy - I figured that once you have physical access to the box, you can get into the SAM, then getting the password to "unencrypt" the NTFS encryption.

I use Symantec PGP. You can create disk volumes and put whatever you want into the virtual disk.
