Ok, I live in an area of FL that is known for it's great restaurants and clubs (South Beach legends) but some of them are all shimmer and no substance.

For the BEST Italian, I am caught between 2 places...

1. Escopazzo is a small, intimate place (you definitely need to make reservations as it is almost imppossible to get a table there as they are ALWAYS busy). I am not a big veal eater but the veal here just melts on your tongue and the traditional tiramisu is to die for.
1311 Washington Ave
Miami Beach

2. Cafe Abbracci has a staff that makes you feel both welcomed and well cared for. I am not a seafood eater but my companion RAVED about his softshell crab and I was ready to strike a deal with the devil to get the recipes of their minestrone and steak arabiatta (Coral Gables).

For Mexican, it's this little out of the way, cheesy looking place but the food is great (and cheap too! ) called Taqueria El Mexicano. I keep forgetting the name of the dish but they have this meal that is chunks of beef simmered with tomatoes and onions and jalapenos (a lot of this food is sauthentic and picy and not for the delicate palate) [Ft Lauderdale].

Another little great place to chill out (not so much a restaurant more a coffee house) is Warehouse Cafe in Miami. Grab a monkey cappucino and a spot on one of the couches and enjoy open mike night with poets and live music or hang with some friends and yank a game off the shelf and get competitive. Very easy-going and relaxing and the lates and cappucinos and espressos as well as the myriad other coffees they serve are just YUMMY!!

There you fellas go...my .02 from sunny south florida.

In my local area of Torrance, for sushi I go to Sen Nari sushi. They have a special dish (number 4 special) that's not on the menu, that only the locals know about. Great sushi, but kind of expensive.

Depends on what you want:

Rivercafe in Brooklyn for upscale American
Roy's in downtown Manhattan for something different (Polynesian)
Nobu in downtown Manhattan for upscale Japanese
Junior's in Brooklyn for NY style cheescake
Veniero's in downtown Manhattan for dessert
Uncle King's in Queens for Chinese/Korean

Or my dad's restaurant in Chinatown for free meals

Carmel Valley, Ca.
Baja Cantina- Great food (Mexican/ American) Good prices and it has a automoble theme through out

Monterey, Ca.
There is too many to list but I'll give you my favorites.
Rosine's on Alvarado St.- Serves a wide range of high quality food, with a not so pricey price. Make room for a slice of cake, the portions are huge
The Whaling Station- on Wave st ( right by Cannery Row) Steaks and Seafood
This place is a little pricey but the steaks melt in your mouth
For romantic dinning, The Sardine Factory and The Old Bathouse are a great choice. Both are pricey but well worth it.

As for Salinas, Ca.
Not much here for award winning restaurants, but for really good food, large portions, at a low price I would eat at Sangs. This is the locals favorite, breakfast here is great!
Shogun, is where I go for my Sushi.
