Restaurant: J.D.'s
Location: Castro Valley Blvd., Castro Valley, CA
Food: American Diner type food, breakfast food
Why?:
If you're looking for good home style cooking, this is the place. They serve lots of sandwiches, burgers, and breakfast faire. The portions are very very generous and everything is "real". No frozen burger patties, egg beaters, etc. Its a very small, kinda cramped place, but for some reason most really good restaurants are usually this way. But its very homie and cozy. The price is very reasonable (Castro Valley is not exactly a rich place). They only serve dinner on Friday nights though. They have an item called the "Super Combo Breakfast" which I think costs like $14-$15 and comes with like 10 different kinds of meats, sausages, links, patties, etc., 7 scrambled eggs, choice of toast, potatoes, and pancakes. I ordered it once and it took up almost the whole table. Needless to say, I didn't finish it. If you're ever in Castro Valley, stop by and give 'em a try.

I was just referring to the suburb I live in

There are some very good restaurants around Brisbane. I'm still trying to think of the upscale shopping area though!

Smith & Wollensky and Spark's (steakhouse) in NYC....to hell with peter lugar
Tiki bar(sea food) in pt pleasant
four seasons in piscataway or pad thai(thai food, my favorite) in highland park
Dougies(gotta try that veal burger) in NYC or teaneck if you are looking for kosher food
Italian places every block.....

For those of you who like chain stores in NY metro area......there is Morton's of Chicago in NYC and hackensack, NJ, and cheesecake factory, in the same mall in hackensack, nj.
If you are looking for krispy creme, there is only one in penn station, NYC. They aren't freshly made, either
