Weird, sure, but almost believable. I ran a chat network back when I was in high school and college and things like that are pretty common. People "know" the other person is lying or making stuff up so they egg them on, seeing how far they'll go. It is a game, in many instances.
Either way, he was stupid. Under no circumstances should you be messing around in ANY way with a young kid these days. You'd think a newsman would understand that, what with all the stings and busts going on these days for similar things and being reported on the news.
