Why do I suddenly feel like trading up to a white Bimmer?

Way to go, BMW!

From a local Massachusetts newspaper:

Ride a Beemer, raise some money
Tuesday, July 2, 2002

NATICK, MA - Residents may notice a squadron of white BMWs tooling around town today driven by folks looking for a thrill ride in the name of a good cause.

The sixth annual Ultimate Drive to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation kicks off today at Foreign Motors West Inc. in Natick where 16 specially marked BMWs will be available for the public to test drive.

The cars are part of a fleet being driven to sites around the state and New England and range from a standard model to convertible to top-of-the line rides.

Marc Huaman, sales manager at the Natick dealership, said as many as 144 people may register to drive a BMW. As of yesterday 125 people already had signed up. For every mile driven, BMW will donate $1 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

This year BMW is hoping to raise $1 million through 219 fund-raising events at 200 cities nationwide. Since the Ultimate Drive started in 1997 the event has raised $5 million for the foundation.

"We wanted to try to find a creative way to benefit the Komen Foundation," said Amy Quarmby, spokesman for BMW and the Ultimate Drive.

The Ultimate Drive started in April and has raised $330,000 from 82 different stops hosting the event. Last year, Huaman said the Natick location helped to raise $3,650.

"There's a very high degree of continued involvement and interest in the event," Huaman said.

Huaman said the fund-raiser is a "feel good" event the dealership has participated in since BMW launched it. People come to test drive the high-end cars but also to help a good cause either because they have had a personal experience with breast cancer or know someone who has.

There is no commitment or donation necessary to participate in the event and Huaman said the event is designed to promote awareness, not sell cars.

People may register to drive a car and help raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation by calling 1-877-4-A-DRIVE. Following the Natick event the BMWs will be driven to the BMW Gallery in Norwell for the last stop in Massachusetts.

This year BMW added a raffle where for a suggested $10 donation people will get a chance to win a silver BMW M5 autographed by Madonna. Madonna was featured in a Web-based film created by BMW which featured the M5.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker in memory of her sister who died of breast cancer at age 36. The foundation is staffed by volunteers working to advance research, education, screening and treatment of breast cancer.

I drove this program a few years ago when BMW first introduced the X5. The event was held at the Texas Motor Speedway and was a first class event!

They paired you with a "professional" race car driver with whom you proceeded to drive the wheels off these new X5's (they literally went through a set of tires a day on some vehicles on a fleet of about 50 trucks). At the end of the day, you got to race against the clock with the other participants. It was so much fun!

I was going to buy an X5 based on that event, although BMW didn't have a dealer in AK at the time, so I ended up with a ML320.

If you have the chance to drive in this thing, DON'T MISS IT!
