Default California - DMV wait time for new reg. ?

OK ... If you live in California help me out...

I am looking to buy a car in California, I live in Canada. I need temp reg/plate to drive home with so I dont get pulled over by the police. I will be driving thru several states. The DMV will not accept phone calls from my country (so annoying)

The seller tells me the following information...

If I buy the car, the plate stays with it and that is all i need to drive around the USA.
He also says I dont have to pay any taxes since i do not live in CA.

This is a private sale

So, I have no way to verify this...since the DMV wont allow me to call them. Do I not need temp Reg. to drive around also???? Is the temp regestration passed on to me also when I buy it?

If i were to go down to the dmv to get temp reg. and/or plates, how long would it take to process??? 5 min....5hours...5days?????

Can anyone fill me in with some info that is from CA and knows for sure!!!!!

Thanks

go to www.dmv.ca.gov and make a reservation. or call ahead and see how long it will take and what documentation you will need.

Does the CA DMV block canadian phone numbers?

How come you can't call them.

This makes no sense.

I've had buddies sell cars to guys out of state no problem.

You don't deal with the CA DMV; the seller does. You pay for the car, get a receipt and must get the pink slip (title) with the seller's signature on it. You call your insurance company on your cell phone and tell them to add the car to your policy. You then drive your car back to Canada and that's where you register it...The seller only has to send in a release of liablity form to the CA DMV. Enjoy the trip.
