California earthquake...6.5 on Richter
Just read that there was an earthquake measuring 6.5 that rocked central California coast today. At least 2 people killed and many injuries reported. Hope everyone is ok.
yeah.. it's quite the buzz around here... the USGS is right down the street from me here.
Personally.. I don't mind more earthquakes... maybe it'll scare the non-CA natives out of here and one day I'll be able to afford a decent chunk of real estate...
But really this is a time when people should be glad for all the infrastructure and zoning and permits and junk that we all have to go through to build stuff.... a 6.5 almost anywhere else in the world (Japan excepted), and you'd prolly be reading about hundreds of deaths. In this case you see some major damage to 1 building that was really old, and the people who were killed were outside I believe ... It'll prolly take close to a 7.0 to do major damage around here these days.
On a side note with regards to earthquake stuff... have you guys taken the time to stand still in a mall these days? those things are CONSTANTLY moving... pretty scarry stuff, both from the perspective of it moving so much, and from the perspective of all the engineering that goes into that stuff so it DOES move alot and still remains solid.

I am kinda curious about the prolonged Memphis earthquake because we are overdue for a catastrophic one for about 7 years now, the last big one was recored about 100 or so years ago and it was recorded to be OVER 12 on the richter!!!!
So everyone and everything would be obliterated if that happened again. Kinda scary but oh well:-)

There is a theoretical limit on the richter scale of about 9.0 - 9.5, due to the yield point of the earths crustal rocks.
I dont think you can hit 12 on the richter unless it was an impact event. (large meteor or something like that)
