this tragedy is doing wonders to bring our country together as one
i hate to say it, but my neighbors who don't talk to each other were hugging today. strangers at supermarkets were shaking hands and talking about yesterday's tragic events. i see people waving american flags at major street corners, people honking their horns in support. it took a tragedy to bring us together, and i hope we don't forget this feeling of solitude with time past.
god (buddha or whatever deity you believe in) bless america.

wouldn't it be great if it didn't take this to bring people closer together.... But it always seems like it does. I know in my family when something terrible happens we all become closer...and then after memory fades...we drift again...back to normal. We are pretty close, but not like we should be... I think if people kept the kind of attitude americans have towards each other right now...we could probably avoid these kind of disasters, but such is life.
Somewhere hidden is a lesson to be learned. Take this board for expample, people from all over the world come together, and are treated as family. Why can we do this here, to faceless thousands and snub the guy who drops his keys infront of you on the sidewalk. It's a shame that a diaster like this is what brings people togther, when Just waking up in the morning should be enough.

I was talking to B this morning about her commute to work. She told me that even though it was crowded on the freeway, no one honked and everyone was being very polite to eachother.

You obviously haven't visited some of the other forums.
There is a fine line between brining people together/patriotism and hate. Many adults across the country are showing their kids how to hate. I don't believe that's how you bring people together.
However, it does bring people together for the most parts. It's just unfortunate that bringing people together isn't the only thing it's doing.

We look past the flaws and the problems an find a common bond a thread of belonging. We are all the same inside, just looking for a way to express it.
Let's see, here in Chicago alone: there are two separate attacks on Palestinian males (both born in IL) that were beat up for no other fact than their ethnicity being what it is and having to spend a night or two in the hospital, Mosques being burned with molatov cocktails, "Middle Eastern" looking kids and women being spat at, derogatory comments being made in our most prestigious institutions of higher learning (UIC, Loyola, and yes Northwestern) towards students by other students.....
For me, Desert Storm wasn't the most positive time in my life. I was never ever a fighter or an instigator of fights in my life....even though I'm not of Middle Eastern decent, I caught hell in high school for being a sand ni**er, a camel jockey, etc. But damn that time in my life where I learned how to fight, how to lose fights, and how to win fights....
Yes...I am on edge right now and may be waiting for the day I get spit on by a "true" American....maybe I am waiting for the person to instigate with my sister, mother, father, or god forbid for the person who terrorizes my fiance.....
Did you hear about what happened to the mosque in Texas?....It was f*cking shot at!!!! How American and patriotic is that!!!
For the most part, I am very tolerant of many things....there are just some things that affect me so personally that I will not tolerate, no matter what!!!
