Technically, if the treadmill is moving backwards at 10mph, and the wheels are rotating as if they'd move forward at 10mph in concrete, the net result is the wheel rotating in place.

What Neutered Sputniks doesn't seem to understand is that if the engines are throttled just enough to move the plane forward at 10mph, then plan will move forward at 10mph no matter what. Turn on the treadmill at 10mph backwards, and the wheels will spin up as if they're moving at 20mph, but the plane will continue moving forward at 10mph without a care in the world. His RC car example shows he incorrectly thinks the plane pushes against the ground via the wheels, like a car does. He doesn't realize that the engines push against the surrounding are, and don't care one little bit what's going on with some treadmill.

And NFRs2000NYC a plane sitting still in calm wind creates no lift at all, no matter what the engines are doing. Ever look at a 737? The engines are mounted below the wings, with the exhausts behind the wings. They don't blow wind over the wings to generate lift, they're simply there to thrust the plane forward.

End of discussion. If you still fail to visualize this, you have the brain capacity of a chimp. Out of self respect, please refrain from posting anymore.

Makes sense to me.

Another good example would be a fighter jet where the engines are aft of the aircraft.

I don't think a prop mounted to a plane can create lift on that stationary plane simply by blowing air over the wing.

Put a fan on a sailboat, and aim it at the sail. Make the boat small enough so that you're convinced there's enough power to move the boat.

The boat will not move, no matter how fast or powerful the fan is...but, the second you lift the fan off of the boat, it will move.

I suspect the same type of thing will happen with the airplane.

I think think on whole, the posts in this thread lowered the net IQ of the entire internet forum community by a measurable amount. Maybe magician can calculate it for us.
