Can superman fly without the costume?

OK, I can't believe I'm going to date myself by responding to this, but...
There was a large-format comic from DC comics in the mid 70's that was based on the question of whether the Flash or Superman was faster. If I remember correctly, two aliens made a wager and somehow forced Sup and Flash to run (and running only) around the earth.
It was a tie, but they arranged it that way. Both thought they could have beaten the other if they'd tried.

Actually, his adoptive mother made his suit from the red and blue swaddling clothes he was wearing when he came from Krypton as a baby, so this fabric was immune to damage from bullets, fire, etc., just as was Superman.

Yep!! And remember: Spiderman kicked Superman's ass in one of the great city-block-destroying battles in Marvel comics history!
I'm not entirely sure about the answer to the original question. ALL I know is that when I was 4 I put on a superman costume and a pair of six shooters in hopes of flying and saving the world and I was let down. BIG TIME. IMO it can't be the suit.
