Default Is CAPM worth it?

I am thinking about getting either CAPM or PMP cert. I am still working on the application. I wonder, if I can pull together all the required project hours for PMP, is going for CAPM worth it?

Or am I better off just wait and accumulate the project hour to go straight to PMP?

In canada, the PMP designation is strongly recognized. I've taken all the classes except for the final exam to get the PMP certification. My views on the program is that it is a good tool in the shed, but not the shed itself if you know what I mean.

What are your expectations after finishing the certification??

I have been doing development for the last 10+ years. I have some project management experience and looking to move away from development and into PM. I think the PMP (or CAPM) will be my ticket to proof to the management that I have the qualification to move into PM.

It's funny: I've taught a number of PMP courses (risk management, cost management, quality management), but have never bothered to study for or take the PMP test.
