Why not look to work in the finance department of a car, motorcycle or airplane manufacturing company? Combine your skills with what you love. Where are you located? Can you relocate? The key when looking for any job is to develop contacts and have a killer resume tailored to the job you want - not a generic one. A tall order, but competition for certain jobs is keen, so you want to stand out. Good luck!!

All work sucks, thats why they call it work. All I ever wanted to do was play pro baseball, short of that I am not doing what I "really" want to be doing, but I do pretty well.

I am currently located down in Richmond, VA and I could relocate, but NOT up to northern VA. I refuse to put up with that traffic and the obscene cost of living up there. I did think about the finance department at a car dealership or something similiar, but typically you have to know someone to get in.

I want something different, diverse, and challenging, but I know that is a tall order. And I refuse to waste my time doing something I hate, can't stand, or leads to NOTHING.

OK...if you want to be proactive and you don't have any contacts, cold call the manager in the finance department of a dealership where you'd like to work. Tell him/her you might be interested in that kind of work and would like an informational interview about the responsibilities, etc, either on the phone or in person. If you don't get a good response, then call another dealership. Have your resume together in case you need it - be sure you keep the discussion informal. Maintain a positive attitude to make your job search successful.

Relocation also means out of the state of VA. Don't sell yourself short. Fix up your resume and post it online. Don't just talk about it, do something about it. Everyone has something that they rather be doing but does it pay for the bills? Can't chase dreams forever. Shit, I'd rather be singing in a studio and making albums or touring rather than sitting here typing up use case documentations and designing user interfaces. At the very least, find something that is stimulating.

mediocre job ---> mediocre pay

hard job ----> great pay

a job you love -----> little pay

sometimes if you find a job you love you'll eventually get paid OK.

Big 3 Public Accounting....move to Detroit, and get involved with the Automotive practice. That would be my advice. It has all you want there. You can work in Valuations, M&A, even Assurance if you want. There are set levels and pay scales with each level. You achieve, you get promoted (most of the time).

I thought of this for myself a few years ago but decided Detroit was not the place for me.

I am trying to remain positive, but deep down I just have NO clue what I really want to do. Working for the "Big Three" would be cool (if they could ever figure out how to make money), but I really don't want to live in Detroit...not my cup of tea.

What about a career assesment test, or a career counselor?
