here's my question to you: would you get a phone that has tons of features (camera, live tv, gps, blah blah blah) but you can't use them when you need them? If your answer is yes, then we both have different requirements and shouldn't be arguing.
No, features + customer service + price + coverage area + service quality all play into the equation, that's what I'm saying .. and not arguing either way.

So basically, you are telling me, the technology that is currently being offered by Verizon in it's 1x system won't work if i go out of my verizon coverage? DUH!!!! why would it work on a partner network if they are not verizon 1x??? that is just basic common sense.
No what he is saying is that Verizon's features and capabilities are not consistent within their own network.

Actually, it is good to update your phone's programming once in a while. PRL's and other features change month to month, so you never know when a new tower has decided to join your companies list of towers
Again, udpates to the phone have no correlation with new towers.

but you can say that with any carrier that is in the mist of going to newer technology. ATT is the same, SUNCOM is the same, Cingular is the same... Sprint is the same.. all carriers, unless they can't change, can't upgrade the entire network all at the same time.. you do it in phases....

Updating phones do have correlation to new towers. IF a new comes online, and say, it is not your own tower, and it is a perferred tower, unless you update your Perferred Roaming List on your phone, you will never know about it.

Certain rate plans cause your programming on the phones to change too. So if you were on a local plan, you might be roaming in an area where you won't, if you had a different plan...

Again, you are missing the point he is making. Verizon has both TDMA and CDMA service and the features are not consistent across the two types of networks. AT&T is still TDMA and converting to GSM (of which the carrier protocol is still TDMA) and is faced with some of the same issues.

True, PRL updates with some of the carriers are still not OTA (although they are with Verizon) -- but then a lot folks, myself included set the phone to never roam and as such software updates don't do squat with regards to new towers within your own network.

once again.. i don't know if i should laugh or cry... because from your posts.. i have to say... you have no idea what you are talking about....

VERIZON WIRELESS DOES NOT HAVE TDMA!!!!!.... because of your insistence that Verizon does have TDMA.. i have to say... you don't know squat about wireless systems.... please tell me that you made an error about TDMA and verizon.. and i will forgive you....

*ed note... unless you are referring to companies that Verizon purchased that HAD TDMA... that doesn't really count does it? cause Verizon changed them over to CDMA right away... because none of the rate plans would allow the user to be using TDMA, CDMA, PCS.. for example... DOBSON communications that verizon purchased a year or so ago.. they were TDMA.. but Verizon changed it over to CDMA .....*

Verizon does in fact have TDMA service in certain areas.

I'm not certain why you insist on insulting other folks including myself, perhaps some sort of self worth issue, but one of us has built these systems and one of us just sells phones to people.

Who do you think knows more about the underlying technologies?

I have had Verizon for almost 8yrs and i have never, never, and mean never been dumped off a call. I call all over the country with it weekly. My buddies that have sprint,Tmobile, and AT&T have that happen all the time they brag how cool their phones are but everytime they call me at work or on my home phone we get cut off or their phone gets really staticky and they have to hang up. Lamage Get Verizon

Does anyone have any idea when this portable number thing will actually happen. I currently have Cingular and I really want to switch service, but keeping my number is more important than what service I have.
