Cell phones in cars?
Usually, I don't have time to use my cell while driving becuse I'm too busy tailgating the slow drivers, passing them at full throttle, then cutting them off. Other times, I'm too busy eating my Bacon Bacon Cheeseburger to realize I'm at my exit, so I cut across 4 lanes of traffic to make my exit. Or some times my hands will already be full, what with me shaving with the right hand and steering with the left; why, I even have to get my passenger to shift for me.
I've heard of studies that demonstrate that even the hands-free phones are unsafe; it isn't the fiddling with the phone that causes the greatest problems, it's that whilst talking on the phone your concentration on your driving is diminished.
(Why wouldn't the same be true for talking to someone else in the car? I submit that someone in the car can better judge the driving conditions and quell the conversation when things get more involved; someone on the other end of a phone cannot.)
Two days ago my son was driving in the left lane of a residential street in our Voyager. A man in an Accord pulled into the right lane from a parking lot; he was on a cell phone. The next thing my son knew this idiot was making a U-turn in front of him! My son broadsided the Accord, the right front of the Voyager is destroyed, the airbags went off so the dash is destroyed, and so on. Perhaps the Accord driver--who hasn't insurance, by the way--is simply a moron who would do this sort of thing without distractions, but the cell phone didn't help the situation.
Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt.

OhioRacer,
I agree with your agreement with CBeyond's comments. The pics come from some of my crazy friends and relatives. I have some more equally stupid pics in my photo lib.
I let some of them get away though. The one of Osama screwing a donkey was a classic. But not too topical any more. The title of that one was "They finally found Osama!"

Not sure if this was already said, but it makes a big difference on whether the car is a stick or auto transmission. When driving the Explorer I have no problems talking on the phone and driving well. In the S2000 I find it nearly impossible. I am not much at multi-tasking though...

While I understand it may be difficult to steer, shift and talk on the phone. What do you say about drivers who are at a stop light, the light goes green, and they just sit there talking on the phone? Or those phone calling drivers that are on the freeway and their speed goes 10 MPH below the speed limit then accelerate to 15 above and back and forth? Or those callers that drift left and right of their lanes? I understand business (not illegal) and emergency calls, but I see drivers who are apparantly in deep personal conversations and are totally oblivious to what is going on around them.
My sister has called me several times while driving and it drives me crazy. These are personal calls that she could easily do when she gets safely home. Knowing the type of person she is, she should not be driving and talking on the phone and I've told her.
I wish they never invented cell phones and made them so widely available.

Did you ever sit on the Cedar-Brainard ramp in the morning and watch women put their make-up on while the light goes from red to green to red? I swear that is the ultimate piss off for me. I'm surprised I have a middle finger left I launch it with such force.

My person feeling is that cell phones are a plague on our society. The way they're used as an entertainment device has further impersonalized and compartmentalized human interaction. They give people an excuse to not plan ahead, avoid participation in the world, and annoy strangers in many different ways.
But that's just me, Mr. Vegas.

Those driver/callers really scare me when I'm out with the S.

The problem is that cell phones and cell phone time has become so inexpensive that everyone expects to be able to reach you at all times and if they don't they move onto the next person. This is the primary reason why I don't drive the S2000 on a regular basis.
As a side note, I think I am a very good driver with the phone; but have been guilty of the wanders, irregular speed, etc. when on the phone.
