Funny how this debate happened a few years ago in Europe, but now over here EVERYONE agrees that driving whilst talking on the (mobile ) phone is dangerous .
It's forbidden and severely punished in most countries. Of course some drivers still do it, but, if asked, no one will try to justify himself with some lame 'I know what I'm doing' excuse.

You'll see in a couple of years when the mobile phone use will be as widespread in the US as it is in Europe, and when you'll have 40% more crashes caused by this, that it's perhaps a good idea to use a whole brain when you drive...

I agree with you le car. Time will tell. As good a driver as some of these cell phone users think they are, they don't seem to get the fact that they are a danger to the rest of us.

getting really off topic here... what about guys who are getting head while driving? Is it as bad as a woman putting on makeup while driving? He might have both hands on the wheel (if not one), but i highly doubt he's concentrating on driving....

WOW!!! I started this last July and at this point the vote is 28-28. That's interesting. I really thought there would be a lot of sensibility and most people would realize the hazards of cell phone calls while driving. Shows what I know.

Alas, this is beyond the scope of a lot of drivers even without the excuse of a cell phone.

Anything that can be dangerous should be outlawed. And anything that isn't necessary should be outlawed as well.

I hope this is sarcastic. Otherwise there goes track days, anything over 90 hp, speed rated tires above 75 in the US, etc.
Yeah, it was sarcastic. There goes cars as well. They're dangerous, and human beings once got along fine without them. Same could probably be said for 90% of all human activities.

Since it was my statement you're responding to, I still think that is makes a difference. I am not saying that driving with a cell phone is any car is safer than not talking on a phone because clearly it isn't, only that if someone is on the phone and they have to worry/think about shifting it takes away some of what concentration is left, moreover without a handsfree set it makes a juggling act necessary.
