When renting online ALWAYS print the confirmation and bring it with you. I have found deals with discount codes and so forth that the local branch wanted to not honor, but I had my confirmation in hand.

During my last trip to Hawaii over Christmas and New Years in Honolulu the online rates for that week for your basic crap box economy car was ranging $600-$700 for the week. I had booked through a source and got a rate of $245 for the week. Trust me, they did not want to honor it but I had the confirmation from the company website. They had no choice.

Always rent with an amex card. Free insurance for rentals. Just decline the rental company's coverage.

I had an issue once where someone swiped the car in a parking lot. Before I returned the car, I reported and documented everything with amex. Returned the car with all the info and never heard from either company again about it.

Many credit card companies have this coverage. Read the fine print though. If you are renting anything other than a regular car to drive on regular roads it's great, but if it's a jeep or off road vehicle there are exceptions to the coverage. I know someone who got screwed by this.

this is correct. they always stipulate in the fine-print about no off-road use.

the same can go for renting trucks to tow with, so make sure you ask before you do.

You can get discounts easily. I recently rented from hertz to drive to new mexico to go skiing. I applied the family discount coupon from simply google searching 'hertz coupons' online and negotiated 75$ of my 5 day rental by calling after the reservation and acting like I found a better deal and very politely asking if they can budge a little on the price.

They also have special edition corvettes and in some places lotus elises. I have a friend who rented one of the stangs and enjoyed it.
