Default Check card number stolen, RANT

So, my wife is in Spain for the next month or so, has been for about a month. She used our Check card a couple of weeks back to buy some clothes. I get a call from our credit union the other day saying there has been some suspicious activity with the card. I shrug it off and tell the guy not to worry that my wife is in fact over there and all ...

I go to take out a few bucks today from checking ... nothing. Mind you I am an ass and keep 12-20 grand in there at most times. All gone. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

What's better though is god knows how long this has been going on and as it is after 5 my bank is closed ... and there is NO AFTER HOUR NUMBER TO CALL TO DEACTIVATE HER CARD ... that's if I even had the ing card number in the first place.

WHY IN THE HELL IS THERE NO AFTER HOURS NUMBER?

Sigh. Venting. I guess there is no more money in there to spend anyway ...

ya, its gone, cancelling won't do much for you now.. that sucks large though.. I find it hard to believe that you can only report a stolen card from 9-5

One thing I'd be concerned about is that they called you, and you said it was cool, now its not, I see red tape in your future

Maybe it's the exchange rate?

Wow, that stinks. Good luck with that. I know my mother had a credit card stolen once. The theives charged up like $12,000 worth of goods. MasterCard's policy is that the customer is not responsible for the charges, so you may be ok (though it is a major PITA). Again, good luck.

Sorry to say but this is the exact reason I will NEVER use a debit card. Of course I use credit cards all the time because there's an extra barrier of saftey (i.e. not reaching into my bank account and depleting it). Credit cards can always be disputed. In fact, I had an $8,000 fraudulent charge on my card years ago and got it resolved fairly quickly. I was lucky. Best of luck.

Here's some info that might be helpful.

i used to not use a debit card due to liability, but now most banks have no customer liability so I use one a lot.

I've had a number stolen several times and have had cards MADE with my number. I've had thousands stolen. I got it all back quickly and the bank even gave me an interest free line of credit until it was resolved.

bank of america at that time, but they charged $11/mo in fees so I dumped them. Washington Mutual now.

I've had my credit card numbers stolen 3 times. I even had a girl named Angela "marry" me. She made a card with her name and my last name and stayed in a 5 star hotel. The hotel manager called me and I said I didn't know her...he said "great, the FBI is here and we'll go get her"
