I read a report on CNN indicating that the hardware nowadays can sustain the amount of stress that's placed onto a computer when it's switched on and off.

I still keep mine on though Much easier to jump on and off whenever I want.

I doubt he's running shares on a standalone system. Wouldn't you have something better to do anyway... like polish your car or something?

I was told that the power consumption of a monitor and cpu is equal to a 100 watt light bulb??? so, power costs will go up.

However, I schedule all my virus checker, norton stuff and updates, for the week hours of the morning when I am fast asleep so as I am not interrupted during the times I am on the computer.
