How come you're not considering a notebook computer?
The fact that I'm typing here on this forum does not represent current ownership of a desktop. In fact, the last one I owned was a 900mhz Athlon Thunderbird or something to that effect. I have been using my roommate's computer for the past month or so and I'm sensing that he's getting tired of that even if it is only for an hour or two.
Once I have everything finalized I'll list what I ended up with.
That last line could make all the difference in the next 6 months or year... Anyway I say laptops are fine if you dont game. They dont stand a chance in the next generation games, not because of processors but thier videocards. Their not up to it. Can you run DOOM3 on a laptop?, maybe. Can you run it good?, no f'in way.
I dont need a laptop, and I try and not be biased. But if you have no need for a laptop (the portability) then get a desktop, much more upgradeable, usually cheaper, better preformance, more expansion, and others I am forgeting.
when I say better preformance I mean dollar for dollar.

Or just go to www.pricewatch.com www.tigerdirect.com or www.newegg.com and build your own custom PC with the best priced parts. If you want built PC go with something you can upgrade easily in the future. I still use a 500 MHZ PIII @ home that outperfroms my friends new PC. Its all about the parts you use. Soon Im building my own watercooled Monster PC with a P4 extreme edition or AMD 64 bit processor. There is a tons of options out there, GOOD LUCK!

It runs mutilmedia and office applications quite well. The 2.0GHZ Pentium M outperforms the 3.2GHZ P4 in all the benchmarks (gaming, office, content creation) except for media encoding and professional 3D rendering. Running at it's least power saving mode, it consumes less than 1/4 the power of the P4. It's performance is about equivalent with the A64, clock for clock not counting 64bit applications.
