Dilemma with a Lease...
She knows she's responsible and is gonna pay for whatever is needed. I did recommend an engine rebuild to her. If a used motor is installed, then it will not have the original VIN plate on the engine: red flag for the dealer. How would a dealer react to a used engine being installed?
She should talk to service at the dealership she bought the car and get their thoughts on a new engine or a rebuild, with it being a leased car, first.
If it's leased through a 3rd party bank that is not affiliated with an actual vehicle manufacturer like Chase, US Bank, Fifth Third, Etc she will have to call them at some point bc in my experience in the car industry for 8 years 3rd party banks can really take advantage of a customer after the lease is up, with extra fees. Most manufacturer banks are a little more conservative.
Either way if I was you I would stay the hell away from her, at least when she's getting prices, I think her eyes will pop out of her head when she sees what they both cost.

I know a girl that did almost the same thing. The blown engine was covered under warranty despite the fact that she didn't get the oil changed.

Lol... So her only option would be a rebuild?

No oil change since 2006? C'mon man!
