Yeah, it used to mean that but now its just UBS.

It still means that to most people. Why are they trying to dump the name? Union Bank of Switzerland sounds a lot more prestigious than UBS.

Oh its because Union Bank of Switzerland joined with a few other banks and now they pretty much just call themselves UBS.

- this is what ive been told, not 100% sure.

I worked for ARCO when it was still Atlantic Richfield, soon after the merger. Then the company came up with the name ARCO. Now, no one associates with Atlantic Richfield.

In most mergers and acquisitions, they're legally required to change the name (it is a new company, right?), so they'll go with the acronym (or similar) to keep the brand, but fulfill the requirements.

That's a pity. The first time I ever saw a UBS branch was in Switzerland, and I always liked the idea of dealing with the gnomes of Zurich.
