I use Snap-on and they occassionally breakdown, but they repair them when the Snap-on truck comes around ... of course you're without that tool for the time being. I like gearwrench but they have a tendency to grow legs and walk away from my tool box before they get a chance to break on me

NO Sears won't replace it while you are in the store. If you are lucky they will rebuild your ratchet in front of your very eyes. If they don't have a qualified person to build it you have to return when that person is in the store or leave it for up to 2 weeks.

I would never buy a Crapsman product. I have broken more than I have left.

You went to the wrong store and/or the person at the counter was new/uninformed.

And I am not so sure about rebuilding it either. I have taken a 3/8 drive ratchet and a 12mm wrench back and they have instructed me to get a new one off the wall, and thats it I have a new tool. I dont think they even make ratchet rebuild kits.

Further, how could you never buy a Craftsman product but "have broken more than [you] have left?

I would seriously get the store manager involved on this . The warranty applies to hand tools. That is what we are talking about here. Other items probably would have to be sent off, just like HD, Lowes, etc...

Who the hell only owns one rachet (unless it's a 1/2" drive)?
Who said anything about owning 1 rachet? I own 4 other besides the 1 in question.

TheOldMan: That's interesting. I have never seen Husky anywhere besides the HD.

Craftsman rocks! I broke a 3/8 drive ratchet a few years back, drove to Sears, exchanged it and was on my way. The whole in-store transaction took about 3 minutes.

if you half take care of things, they just dont break that often. smaller stuff is not that expensive no matter what brand, the larger stuff is not broken that easy.
you are only going to use maybe (4) sockets working on a honda, 3/8 + 1/2" ratchet, dont you have a few of each? if something breaks the project continues.

cheap tools: the sockets 4example, dont fit as tight on the fastener.

these days there are enough used tools 4sale that you can pick the better brands. its not like collecting stamps so mac/ snap-on/ sears all work well.

I broke a Craftsman ratchet using it with a pipe for more leverage on a stubborn bolt. Took it in and the guy said "i've never seen that before." He reached right behind him on the wall where they keep 3-4 ratchets in the three popular sizes, did some paperwork and handed me a new one.

Some Sears will NOT replace a ratchet in store. I broke a 3/8" pro and got it replaced in a few minutes with a new one a few years ago. The replacement broke a few months ago, and they took it for a few days and repaired it, no charge. The funny thing was they had about 25 broken ratchets in the box under the counter waiting to be repaired.
