DSL vs Cable Modem.....
I have a cable modem and love it. I can only get 144Kbps in DSL where I live (too far from CO) and it's expensive. It's been pretty reliable and always fast -- except when my neighbors get together to download porn
depends on the availability where YOU live - not necessarily 'your area' as some might say. check and see what kind of connection you can get with DSL, but cable modem is all I can get, been on it since the early bird - its great and not too many complaints. it is 'a shared segement' thus, I'm sharing bandwidth w/my neighbors, but I always get great connections.
btw, you can test bandwidth at www.toast.net or there are some others. I use this when doing tweaks, such as those at www.cablemodeminfo.com and www.speedguide.net

No matter how you think of it, you are alays sharing bandwidth. With a cable modem, you are on the same segment as your neighbors. With DSL, you are sharing bandwidth once it is at the CO. With dialup, you start sharing it at the access point. No matter what you use, you are always sharing; it is just a matter of where.
If you want the fastest overall, you need to find out what kind of feed they have to the Internet and how many users. The highest average of the two will result in a quicker connection overall.

I have Cable Modem.
For me, the shared bandwidth is a feature, not a flaw. We're the only wired house in what you might call an "elderly" neighborhood. So our connection is screaming fast. 400 kbs is not uncommon.
So that might be something to consider.

I was actually going through this decision about a year ago. I decided to get a cable modem since one of my business partners has dsl and he has nothing but problems with it. Granted, he has Pac Bell, and they have some of the worst customer service. His mail server is so slow, when I send him something, he doesn't get it till 30 minutes later. When he sends me things, I don't get them till 30 minutes later also.
I don't think all dsl is that bad, but if you're provider is pac bell, I'd go with cable modem.
