I have DSL and it seems to work pretty well. I was able to download a full version of Navigator in about nine minutes.

I mostly got it because I am lazy and like all my telco services bundled. One bill, one check.

My cable is as fast as a full T1. However, that doesn't mean your cable would. It all depends on your neighbors.
Most DSL I have used are painfully slow, now that I'm used to cable and T1. However, if you can get SDSL at 1 Mbps or 1.5 Mbs, it can be blazingly fast as well.
It won't be cheap though. It can easily cost 300 to 400 bucks a month. I'm about to get one. Ask me again in a month.

Hey C3, what kind of connection does s2000online have?
Is this going to your cable modem at home?

I've used both Cable and DSL. I prefer DSL. My cable company's service sucked - half the time it wouldn't assign me an IP address properly and I must have a huge number of Cable Modem users in my 'hood cause my speeds fluctuated quite a bit. On the other hand, I've had DSL in my apartment and now in my house and minus a couple of setup issues it's worked great. I get d/l speeds upwards of 1 Mbit/sec consistently; no speed fluctuations if my neighbors are d/ling porn! I also like it because for a nominal extra charge I get 5 static IP addresses which is great if you're a computer geek like me. Honestly, either solution is going to be a million times better than dial up so you really can't lose. Good luck whichever way you choose to go.

You can get adsl 1.5M/384k for 100-200 bucks - super fast speed.

No, the server is co-located and has 10Mbps to multiple OC3 links. All residential service is asymetric, that is faster in one direction than the other. That is true of my cable modem too. I get downloads of about 1Mbps but uploads of only about 200Kbps. It's plenty fast for what I need but I do wish it was a bit faster when uploading large files to the server. DSL (ADSL) is the same.

I started off with cable modem, but it always seemed to be down more times than it was up, and was never particularly fast at peak hours. After I changed over to DSL, the average speed has remained pretty steady (during peak and slow times), between 675 and 745 kbs. I believe the transfer rate is highly dependant on how far your house is from the nearest switching network box. The main disadvantage I find with DSL is that when it goes down (which is fairly rare), it stays down for at least a day or two. The main disadvantage with cable is that it gets bogged down durinig peak hours.

I have a cable modem and I am extremely happy with it. The service is great, the price is fair and the performance is exceptional.
