HondaGal,
I have a Sony DVD and love it. Had it for about 3 yrs. no problems.
Your reciever should say Dolby Digital and DTS on it. If it does not you will have a problem if you do not get a DVD player with a built in decoder. If it does say this, do not buy a DVD player with a built in decoder, you will be buying the same thing twice. Just get the optical or coax cable to go between the DVD player and the reciever.
If it does not say this, you have some choices to make.
1- buy a separate processor with decoder and an amplifier
2 - If you can get to the amplifier section of your reciever, you can plug your DVD player right into the receiver amplifier. This is what I did for my set up - PM me if you want more details.
Another option is to run all the video outputs into your receiver and use your reciever as a video switcher. This way when you select DVD or VHS, you do not have to select different inputs on your tv. Some people like this, some don't.
If I can make two other suggestion... One get a powered subwoofer. Makes a big difference. Look at Paradigm, they are great for the money and are Canadian made. Two, buy The Matrix on DVD, turn in up LOUD, VERY LOUD and enjoy
.
I may lean towards the sony
Also, how do you know if you need a decoder? or something like that

This may sound dumb, but which component do I hook the DVD up to? receiver or TV

Shelly,
I just got this unit and I like it ALOT.. its $149 and it plays EVERYTHING including MP3 CD's and all forms of CD-R & CD-RW's. It even has it's own built in dolby digital decoder if you don't have one, along with both optical and copper digital outputs. It basicly has EVERYTHING.

I did it..
I bought a Pioneer DV 440. It is very slim line. Cost was $279 CDN. My receiver is a little out of date, so the DTS is not available.
I pulled the audio into the receiver, the video using the S - video cable. Everything works OK! I know I am missing audio quality that the DVD technology has available, however, I am not one to notice this difference.
I rented Driven, and am please with everything. So much for Sony! but the fellow I talked with said there is not a whole lot of difference with players in this dollar range. I chose the Pioneer because I thought this was also a good product.

Glad to see you got one...pioneer is good alot of my stuff is pioneer.
Does your receiver at least support Dolby Digital? If so that is okay. If not...you are missing half the benefits of DVD...the 5.1 sound will make a BIG difference. You have to rent the Matrix!!!

We faced this problem a while back. Whilst DVD players have come down in price, films for them are still relatively expensive. Like everyone, I suppose, we have a pile of VHS videos which get seldom played these days. In spite of the huge difference in prices between various DVD units the basic DVD unit is pretty well identical in all of them. It's only extra features you'll be paying for. Our shopping expedition was rather half hearted knowing we were looking for something that in our case was going to really get little use. UNTIL that is, we realised that the PS2 was also a superb DVD player!
Whilst it's outside your stated budget Shelley, I really would at least think about the PS2. You get a superb games console and a great DVD player! It will connect to your T.V./Audio set up the same as any other unit. In fact it comes with just about every combination of TV/ audio connection you are likely to need.
