DVD Player
I purchased a Pioneer DVD player when DVD had just come out. At the time it was expensive but has done a great job, outputs Dolby Digital for my amp and has SVIDEO for my TV.
So like a previous poster said just match up features of your current equipment eg Dolby Digital, DTS, SVIDEO, etc..

Read her criterias.
"best for the least money spent"
"basic good quality player"
You guys are throwing out stuff that's going to cost her $250-$300 not worth it. The last time I checked consumer reports found that there are basically no real detectable differences in video quality between high end low end DVD players. Why spend the extra money if you don't have to? HG you don't need a decoder unless the DVD player is going in a computer with a video card that can't handle DVDs. Muz the Apex system and some others are hackable meaning region free.

Shelley,
I have to agree whole heartedly with Xviper and his ideas of the false assumptions of consumers on Boxing Day. To answer your question, there are lots of good quality DVD players out there, and you will not need a decoder for your current set up. Some other big features include; multiple DVD carousel, as well as the ability to play MP3 files. I opted for a Panasonic model which holds a single DVD and has MP3 capability. It also has an S-Video output on the back which is great for enhancing picture quality. Mine only set me back $250 CAD which was a good price for the model I purchased. If I were you, I would opt for the single drive over the multiple carousel, as it is debatable whether or not you will really need 5 DVDs in the player at any given time.
The rest is up to you!
Good luck

Thanks guys! I do value your opinions since most of you are worldly knowledgeable in electronics
I only shop at one place for my electronic toys. No big box stores. (I hate them) I just want quality, and do not need the bells and whistles.
I do not even know if I need it to play the mp3 format.
I wanted to go in and sound like I knew what I was talking about. I was wanting to spend about $250 cdn. Not much more. I do not know if my TV is up to the new technology, the TV is about 6 years old. The receiver is 4.
This may sound dumb, but which component do I hook the DVD up to? receiver or TV

For about $300 (US) you can get Sony Model DVP-NS700P. Single disc DVD/CD player. Progessive scan with component video output. Works like much more expensive players at a fraction of the cost.
Ok.. I got it
I think just from researching, I may lean towards the sony. But it will depend on the price. If I have to wait for the new year I will! No rush! If I could only save the GST I would be set
